Electrical Problem
Just got a call from my son who experiencing an electrical problem. He is running a generator but the generator seems to be running under a higher than normal load. A voltmeter shows 120 volts, but at the battery it is 15 volts with low amps. With the generator off, the battery voltage is 11-1/5 volts. I'm thinking the converter is malfunctioning. Any ideas as to what may be the problem. . .

How can he tell there he's getting low amps? Does he have an amp meter across one leg of the connection of the battery? 15vdc may or may not be right, don't know the normal output of the converter, 12-15vdc may be okay. Does the battery charge if he leaves the generator running? He ran the battery too low, 50% is 12v. 11.5 is under 20%, should aim for no more the 50%. The generator, at least mine, will run at a higher rev if it needs to output a higher amperage due to heavier load, like charging a lower then normal battery?

Turns out that the converter is toast. This morning, my son was able to reach the manufacture and ran a limited test.

Rick, is this the converter on your 21? I will be interested to hear what they think caused the problem

No, it is not on my 21. The converter is on my son's RV (an old class A he keeps in city across the state).

Thanks for the clarification. I was just concerned that there was something that was causing the converters Escape uses to fail prematurely.

I agree with Leon, thanks for the clarification Rick. How's everything else going with the 21.

I had a 1+ year old Progressive Electronics fail for no apparent reason on my now sold Scamp. I would propose that being an electronic device, a converter is subject to failing w/o warning. Scamp did send me a new one, which I appreciated because technically, is was out of warranty by a month and a half.

Hi Tom, the 21 is still great. Still haven't relocated the surge protector readout to the "control panel" ala TAfraser.

Rick, Reace saw mine at the gathering in Canada, verified that the standard data cable reached that location, and is now mounting his in the same manner. No more standing on your head to read the indicator! As Donna would say; "Cool Beans".
