Emergency escape window operation
We've been hesitant to open the rear escape window (as we've heard it can be problematic) while camping so I tried opening it at home - I released the red handle until 90 degrees to the window and pushed out as the instructions stated. I pushed hard enough to deflect the sidewall but the window would not open. I also noticed the window screen was held in place with black tape - I assume for easy emergency removal. We would like to use it for cooling and air circulation as the weather begins to warm and the awning style appears to be a good option for ventilation when it's raining. How does this window open

On our 2017, 21' (I assume it's the same or similar escape window), it was stuck pretty tightly the first time we tried to open it, I assume just from being closed tightly against the rubber seal for an extended period of time. But once we got it open the first time, it freely opens now. And yes, it works well for ventilation - although it's kind of an all (about 6" at the bottom) or nothing thing. Not sure what black tape you're talking about.

If the window hasn't been opened in some time, it has a tendency to stick. Just do as you did by opening the latch, then push outward on the bottom. It will open. Just use steady pressure and don't try to push too hard.
The tape on the screen is a new one to me. Our screen is not taped. It pops out too. It's a bit of a pain to get the screen back in, but not a biggie.

The newer versions are better than the old ones. You may have an old one that is a problem to keep open because the screen does not fit. That may be the reason for the tape. Also, our latch broke or does not work even though newer so that it has to be accessed from the outside to keep it open, I believe. We almost never open it and did not open the last one because of the bad fit. They now fit better but yours may or may not. Have a close look at the outside as far as opening it since tape has been used. Yes, it can take quite a push to open.

I found the emergency exit window downright DANGEROUS so we don't use it.
With a toddler around that handle can really hurt someone if bumped while opened and it strikes back at a baby's face or someone's back.
Is this design normal for a modern emergency exit window?

I don't know if it is the usual design but I don't like it either. Yes, you are right, however, I expect that there were good reasons for that design related to emergency exit. That is the primary function and perhaps it is to be used solely for that, so maybe one should not expect to keep it open and use as a normal window. We do not but I know others do. It is only dangerous when treated as a normal window, but it is not.

There is a mod available where a hole is drilled and a pin inserted to keep the window open. With the rear now opening, I hardly open mine.

When he was doing our orientation, Dennis suggested using half of a wood clothes pin pushed into the slot with the opening bar to secure it when open. He said it also works to hold it open part way. I haven't tried it yet.

As others have mentioned, the emergency exit window wasn't designed to be propped open. It's only "dangerous" in the sense that it can close in a hurry and the handle can get you. If you want to prop it open, use a clothespin or modify the handle so it can stay open with no chance of closing when the handle is bumped.
Of course, with the new generation frameless, the back window is a split opening one, and you can ventilate that area without it.

Couldn't find an original post showing this mod, but Pat (Patandlinda) has done it based on this post. Maybe he can weigh in and post a picture. I just PM'd him.

While I've not purchased it, I've kept the link to the little pin that can be used with the emergency window.

as for why I'd like to open the emergency window. I've found the best way to keep the TT cool is to open 1 window in the back of 21 and vent out on the Max fan.
however, sometimes, the air coming from the other passenger rear and rear windows is hotter due to direct sun. so I was missing an option to prop the emergency window open to create this cool flow. Thanks for the referral to the mod!
