Hi Jim,
The reason the fresh water tank doesn't fill automatically when hooked up to a pressurized "city water" source is because many people who camp only where there will be hookups do not want to drive around with the extra weight of a completely full fresh water tank (which is 238 lbs!!!). Also, it would be a major PITA to have to empty out 28 gallons of water onto your campsite before you drive away. So YOU get to decide if you want any water in your tank and how much and when in your journey you decide to fill it up.
Maybe in those large RV's it doesn't make any difference to gas mileage or handling, but depending on your tow vehicle and what you are packing onboard the trailer, 234 extra lbs can make a big difference.

We don't use the tank on our rig. Too much trouble to drain, antifreeze, drain, flush, refill, and then drag the 100 lbs around. We use two former apple juice gallon bottles, refilling them at store water dispensers for about 25¢ a time and shower in the RV parks.

That extra weight in the rear can be beneficial to your hitch set up and tongue weight limitations............

Isn't the purpose of this forum to ask questions and get answers? Why bash someone who is looking for information?

This forum is definitely for asking questions and getting answers.
But some of us are or think they are engineers. I saw a t shirt that pretty much sums us up.
"I'm an engineer
to save time let's just assume that I'm never wrong."
If you really want to see some serious back and forth, get three engineers together to solve a problem. May the fun begin!

Yes it is Amy, and do not let anyone try to persuade you otherwise. At one time we all were new owners in question for knowledge.

Let's give Brian the benefit of the doubt. One seemingly short-tempered post does not define him. He has literally thousands of posts where he has patiently and selflessly helped owners with any number of issues or made useful suggestions during custom modifications. These posts are searchable and hopefully remain here as long as the forum exists. This is a tremendous asset to current and future owners alike.

If there is a mechanical guy there just ignore him. Stress, tension, loading, co-efficient. They talk funny!

Not a good idea to release the air from p.t valve.you need that air gap to make the p.t. valve function. 10% air gap is required.

I have no problem with asking for information, and getting information certainly is a major purpose of the forum. Perhaps you should read my comment again, which clearly states why this particular request is frustrating.

I agree that an air cushion in the top of the tank is necessary; however, the pressure-temperature relief valve is not on the very top of the tank, so even if you open it to purge air until water comes out of the valve, there is still air above it.
