Hatch Catch Fell Off | Curtain Tie Broken

Two items in this one post, just to confuse the subject.

The Hatch Catch on our '19 fell off. This is the little spring catch that hold the utility door open. The one on the outside which allows access under the beds. It fell off earlier when I left the hatch held open for a couple of days. Pushed it back on and it's stayed for a year or so of careful use. It recently fell off again.

I need a way to stick or glue it back on. Ideas please.

There has been some talk of 3M VHB double sided tape on the forum. Charlie Y suggested RP45 would be a good general purpose tape. Would this work well to hold the clip back on? Other suggestions?

The second problem. We've somehow broken one of the plastic ties on the kitchen curtain. This is the clear plastic knob which the curtain strings tie to at the bottom. The first pic shows the right one which is OK, the second shows the left which is the one that is broken.

These are made by United Shade Inc. They have replacement parts and those needed look to be Cord Retainers. Each consists of two parts, a cover and tube. Now the tricky part, the tube comes in two sizes, short and long. Does anyone know if those on the Escapes are short or long?

Thanks for any help. Safe travels.

Hugh

Hi: currinh... I have used "No More Nails" by LePages. Cut to fit and make sure the position is right cause when it's stuck it's stuck!!! I have also used the "First Aid" kit by United Shade. All the parts you need are there. Alf

Sometime after your 2011 trailer was made, ETI started screwing the baggage latches on, instead of just VHB. When we had our 2010 17B up there in 2015 Reace had his crew screw ours on, prophylactically, among a number of other things that they ‘fixed’ that I didn’t even know about or think were broken. All at no charge. And that’s how you get a stellar reputation for exceptional customer service! But I digress. I’d just screw your baggage latch on. If it were me, I’d predrill the holes, shoot a dab of caulk into them, sandwich a layer of butyl tape in there and screw the latch on, then caulk around the top and sides of the latch. Probably overkill, but I don’t think you would ever, ever need to worry about it leaking or falling off.

And I'd replace those cheesy plastic catches with stainless steel!

Donna is right! The plastic catch is very fragile. One of ours broke off when the open hatch door was accidentally bumped. Shipping 2-3 of the SS to Escape would not be a bad idea. Have them installed on the original build!

I believe the factory uses VHB tape to attach, so after 2 years they will fall off. They need to be riveted or screwed in place.

The other weak plastic hold open is the main door hold open on the classic. I replaced mine when it blew up in a breeze with a Stainless Steel unit. Looks much nicer too.

Has anyone found a stainless catch about 2.5" long with screw holes 1 3/16 or 1.25" on center? The product in the link above (and all I have been able to find) have only two holes around .75" (JR rep says .77") inches apart. If possible I would prefer to match the holes from my 2017 Escape-installed plastic catches (one now broken) . Maybe the same manufacturer that Escape sources from (anyone know the brand?), but in stainless steel. Thanks.

They are nice, replaced all of ours with those. Just be aware that you need to drill an additional hole in the catch so it matches the holes in the shell. The rivet size is 3/16 with a 1/2 inch shaft.

When ours broke, I replaced with these. The holes line up exactly. I dabbed some caulk in the holes and on the screws before reattaching. The originals had no tape or liner, only screw on/off. These are a little whiter than the originals, but are a ‘little’ more robust. If the holes line up on the SS, they would be even a better choice:

Thanks all for your help.

I'll likely obtain VHB tape to put the hatch latch back on. I really try to avoid putting holes into our fiberglass shell. It might fall off again, which would be a pain if lost. But it would give a chance to replace with stainless. If I get a couple of years from the tape I'll be happy.

Not sure which posts are in the United Shade First Aid Kit. I'll likely measure ours and call them. They should be able to match on length, or let me know the size in their First Aid Kit. Worst comes to worst I'll order a First Aid Kit.

Thanks again for the help. Safe travels.
