Headliner glue

Does anyone know what Escape uses to hold up the headliner / wall covering or something that might work well? Ours is peeling down a bit inside the upper rear cabinets and I would like to fix it. It seems like what is there on the back of the foam is some type of contact cement.

I would use good old fashion contact cement from a can.

Sneak in there with brush on both sides, wait as directed on the can, then push it back on. I am sure you are familiar with the process.

If it is a big flap you could use the spray if you can get a good angle on the application.

I have used lots of contact cement over the years and on most of my material mods in the trailer. I mix and match as well. I will spread liquid contact cement onto a solid surface like wood or dense foam then use the spray for the cloth.

Good luck.

In the days when you could go in the shop I was in a trailer when a worker was installing some headliner overhead. Didn't see the brand, smelled like most spray adhesives. I've just used spray contact cement with good results.

Try a syringe

Farm supply stores carry large syringes and large diameter needles. Load one up with construction, smelly contact cement adhesive and apply carefully with that. 3M spray adhesives are great for large surface attachment, but overspray on a smallish repair can cause trouble.

I might be inclined to check with an auto upholsterer and get the same glue they use to glue vinyl roofs to cars.... yes, they still do that. That glue has to hold up to extreme heat and cold.

That is what I did in the late 70s. I need someone to sew two pieces of vinyl together for my van roof and took it to a place that did vinyl car roofs. They said that contact cement was the only thing to use as it was not affected by the high heat of a black roof. Needless to say I used more than a gallon to do my van as well as the lower 1/4 which was also covered in vinyl.

Those were the days…

Oh yah, same time frame I used contact cement to attach shag carpet overhead in the Vee berth of the first boat that I built.

Rubicon,
I’m so glad you asked about the headliner glue! My 19 is just now starting to have headliner slippage in the back cabinets as well as front cabinet near the door!

I cut and folded back the foam in most cabinets and the closet so I could bolt a rail to each side of the roof. There is not enough room to use spray contact cement when reattaching the foam. I used acid brushes and a can of contact cement to re glue the foam.

If it is a really awkward working area you might want to reset the foam (push it into position) before the cement is dry. That is what I did in some cases.

You can get spray can extension tubes for slipping behind the foam

Retired from 3M, from one of the adhesive divisions. Have that issue with my 5.0TA, so I contacted an old work friend in the spray adhesive portion of the division. He said to use Spray 76, sometimes labelled Hi-Tack 76. Must admit that I have not yet tried to fix the problem, but will tackle when spring rolls around. I just have to figue out how to get proper access to the area.

Finally got to the headliner repairs in the three rear cabinets. Used the Gorilla spray adhesive Eggscape showed in post #2. You just spray both surfaces as best as possible, let it get tacky and then push it into place. Worked great.
