Horst probes....

Does anyone know if ETI is installing these as standard on the new trailers? No mention on their website....

My new 21 has Horst probes installed as standard, but even after careful and thorough tank cleaning, and no toilet paper down the toilet, they failed to read accurately after a few months. I don’t worry about it. Knowing when to dump us easy, and in a pinch, there’s always a flashlight.

This is some of the best advice out there. The only tank level we are concerned about is our fresh water level.

I asked about the probes as well and was told they're now 'standard'. However, thanks for posting an update Jeff as it's always good to be forewarned and prepared. I had a guy at an RV place tell me once to include a little fabric softener in the black tank. Supposedly, it keeps the sides 'slippery' so that 'stuff' doesn't cling ... always wondered about that.

Properly installed, the Horst probes just work. There's no need for any special additives or solutions in the tank. 3 years on and ours are trouble free. Would have been nice to have them as stock in 2015, since the probes plus shipping to ETI cost a pretty penny at the time.

I've been told they are standard now. I have horst probes they work for me and i use toilet paper.... i also use lots of water and enzyme additives. if they stop working i don't care i can look down the toilet.

I think the main concern on the probes is that they can twist a bit during installation/tightening, so if you have a brand new (clean) black tank you may want to take the opportunity to verify they are installed correctly before, um testing.

We had Horst probes installed on our old 17B and after just over a year, felt that even they weren't always working correctly. They tended to show we were a third full even though we were pretty sure were barely above empty. After a while, you tend to get to know how long you can go between dump station visits, and as other have said, a visual check is always possible. Just going to live with whatever comes standard on our new 21 where the black tank is 15% bigger anyway, should be good for a couple more days of judicious use.

How do you check the gray water tank, other than seeing it back up into the shower floor?

I have three tank indicators on the panel. Fresh, gray and black.


But I forget I even have tank indicators. My Scamp didn't. I learned to use my ears (when water going down the drain) and to 'look'.

I have three tank indicators, too, but they are not very accurate except for the fresh water. I can look for the black water, but what about the gray water, assuming the indicators are not accurate?

grey should work.... no TP or other objects ... mine works but i never fully trust them when it gets pretty full i do check the shower...

in my Casita, I knew the grey tank was full when shower water didn't run down the drain
