How deep is too deep

I need to drive screws into the floor under the bed in my E19, I assume there’s half inch plywood under the linoleum, am I correct? The last thing I want is pierce something down there.

Yes, that's correct, plus the lino thickness and the shell thickness.

Depends on what you want to attach and how strong you want it to be.

I use these nut serts, available at HD etc. They have a much larger threaded area and are stronger than screws. I use the 10-24 bolt as a driver.

In any case either mark the drill bit or use a depth stop.

Thanks Ron, this time all I need is small wood screws but I'll remember the inserts when I need more holding power.

If I were you I would call Escape and ask about the plywood thickness currently being used. I believe it may have changed over the years. On our early 21 I believe it was 5/8 inch so I used screws 1/2 inch longer than the plywood i was screwing down. But call them to find out for sure and use a drill stop if you are pre drilling holes.

You might be right Dave. I've heard others mention 5/8". I did measure mine when I installed my table base it didn't seem like they were quite 5/8" but you can't go wrong using 1/2" as the target.

I remember some complaints that the factory screws were protruding through the f.g. on the bottom. Hope they stropped doing that although a bit of Proflex on them wouldn't be a biggie. The water tank, not so much.
