A little anecdote on the Robertson (square slot) screw. Produced by Canadian Peter Robertson in 1908 after developing a mass production process that cured its tendency to strip out the head
, it became very popular across North America.
Even Henry Ford used them in his Model T since the screw design reportedly saved time in building the vehicles...and time equals money. That's around about the 'time' old Henry decided he wanted exclusive rights to Robertson's design.
Our Peter Robertson refused to relinquish those rights to Henry Ford
, so he subsequently went with the less popular Phillips screw. So in the end as always, someone was screwed.
