Is there an additional tariff cost over the the $160 fee that Escape charges for a trailer to be imported into the US?

US, Canada and Mexico just renewed the North America Free Trade Agreement, so no. You will have to pay your state taxes, but no Canadian tax.

When I plated the 5.0TA in Boulder county, the clerk noticed I had not paid sales tax yet. She rolled her eyes when she noticed it was from Canada. She stated firmly, you have not paid sales tax yet, you have to pay it here.
I said in a calm, understated voice; how much is that.
She looked at me and said A LOT!
She was right, it was a little over 4.5K to plate it with sales tax. Ouch. At least we laughed about it with her afterwards.

When a commercial company exports something across the border they likely have the transaction handled by a customs broker. There is a cost to that. So it's not a tariff and, as has been answered, there is no tariff on items like a trailer.

Hey,
I’m in Oregon too and just today researched how to register the new trailer. They charge 0.5% as a vehicle tax, that you have to pay before registering at the DMV, so in our case it was around $130 one-time fee. Then for the 17’ it’s going to be about another $130-ish to register it for 2 years, and $12 for the single license plate for the back of the trailer.
We got temporary tags for our first trip, and the website says that they are giving a generous “grace period” thru October for expired tags, trip permits, etc. since the DMV are not at full operating capacity. To get the trip permit it was only around $30, good for only 10 days but plus this grace extension or until you get your plates.

That seems a lot. Sales tax is an ad valorem tax based upon the value you paid in US dollars. I see where the current sales and local can range from 3% to 11% which means your bill may have been on the Canadian amount, not US dollar. In US dollar that would be $41,000 US which means $55,000 cdn......? Check your paperwork, you may have over paid.

I wondered if someone might think that. I think the real issue is I live in a very expensive place to purchase and plate a trailer. The sale price was in U.S. dollars as was the receipt.
Here are the details. All comments welcome!

Wow, that is one expensive place to own and plate a trailer. In Wisconsin the cost to register a $41,000 Escape is about 2.2K. It varies a bit between counties but only by .5%.
US purchasers need to realize they probably need to pay sales tax, they should not be paying any Canadian PST or GST taxes. Escape deliveries to US does not include such taxes so it is only natural that your local jurisdiction will want to collect. Not sure how a broker will handle those taxes. Curious to find out what the broker charges and what service they provide.

When houses appreciate between 100,000K and 200,000K per year, a few incidental costs are not so bad.
No complaining here. I just hope this information helps new owners budget for upcoming expenses.
Alf, I love your sense of humor!

Wow what a lot of various fees, I thought on importing my preowned Escape from the US the fees I had to pay were complex. I had a register of imported vehicle fee, the Cdn. GST, our provincial PST plus the price for plate and insurance. At least with our province's government run insurance they cannot make a profit so everyone got a rebate cheque a month ago because auto claims were way down with so much less diving in the spring.

Let's put it this way. It's a commercial entry. If Escape took the trailer to the border with paperwork not cleared and under a broker's bond and said, "we're just delivering it to a guy at Dave's burgers" your burger would be pretty cold before you got the trailer.
At least that's the way it was when I exported products to the U.S., even after NAFTA was in effect.

Glad that Oregon doesn’t have a sales tax, but that is changing now because we did have a small percentage tax or “fee” on our new truck purchase!

Wow,
Those fees are exorbitant if anything else. I'm glad I do not live in your area with my proclivity to purchasing a new Escape when my propane tanks get low, I could not afford to have done it 4 times living there. Some states allow you take rake the trade in value off when titling a new vehicle, some states tax you on the entire purchase price. I know this does not apply to the Escape but it just reminds of the myriad tax structure we all live in.

I agree. It is a very nice place to live and I do get paid for living here. And most of the free world seems to want to buy my house (or one in my neighborhood). So life is good.
I had researched the fees prior to purchasing so I expected that lump.
All in all, very thankful we can do this. So many people want to but can't. We're so lucky. I did not expect the $.17 charge for the actual sticker on the plate.

That is all that matters, if you are happy there, the other stuff is irrelevant.

I remember when I lived in Pittsburgh, I quit looking at houses to buy because the property tax portion doubled the house payment.
We’re not quite as bad as Tim’s bill for registration but not far off.
I guess they get you one way or another, and we can’t all claim to live in SD.
