LP regulator question

As a scuba diver, my dive regulator operates in any orientation. I was toying with rearranging the LP regulator in my 21 so as to make the flipper indicator visible, which would put the regulator diaphragm in a horizontal instead of vertical position.

Any gas experts on here with an opinion?

I don't think they are designed to work both ways, as they are produced to be horizontal or vertical, an I have not heard of one that does both. I believe it has to do with keeping the vent pointed down, so debris can't get into it, and maybe affect the diaphragm. At least, that is my thinking.

Horizontal

Vertical

I can produce gas in either orientation.

Sorry, it was just sitting there waiting for a shot....

Regulator

It has been my experience that the regulator is meant to be a horizontal or vertical unit, not both. I tried my propane grill which is a horizontal unit as a vertical and it would not feed. It also did not work upside down. Turned it right side up and back to horizontal, worked fine.

Ha ha....probably missing something however seem to recall a horizontal setting whereby if one tank drains the other starts automatically. Does the lever end need to point to curb for this?

I doubt that the regulator's control by the diaphragm would be affected by the orientation of the diaphragm, but...

I agree. I think the concern is water (from rain, or condensation) as much as solid debris.

The switching action is driven by pressure. It seems unlikely to me that orientation would matter, but these combination regulators / selectors are configured so that when the vent is oriented downward, the input end is the top and the selector lever is on top or on one side near the top. Either input can be selected as the "main" (used first), leaving the other as the "backup" (used only pressure is lost on the main side).

I don't see anything on the manufacturers sites about mounting orientation except most say vent down like Brian mentions above, although they retract that if it is mounted in a covered or out of the weather situation. It would be easy to test before permanently mounting it by temporarily putting it horizontal and hook up tanks then run one tank out and see if everything works correctly on the switch over and indicator.

regulator orientation

Been in gas distribution business for 40 years. Just make sure the vent points downwards.
