MaxxFan Work

The gear box that opens and closes the lid on my MaxxFan has stripped gears or something. I'm going to need to get up there and replace it. I've never gotten on top of my Escape before. Will the roof hold my weight while I'm working up there or will I need to rig up some sort of scaffolding to lay on while I fix it? Does someone know of a way I can replace from inside?

Yes. I searched maxxfan but couldn't really find anything except threads about the circuit board issues.

I recently needed to replace the same gearbox on my 21C. I removed the entire Maxfan from the ceiling by using a tall step ladder from both sides. You will save time and frustration by also removing the inside panel and clipping the power wires feeding into the fan. This allows you to completely remove the fan and work with it on a bench. The gearbox replacement is not difficult and lots of videos on YouTube will guide you.

from last year:
The lift mechanism on my fan cover went KAPUT, with no known incident to cause this. Crappy, poorly executed die cast mechanism parts, seen after failure analysis. A rain of die cast bits of zinc when I opened it...while camping. Researching this issue, many others have also experienced the same. To order an exact replacement part.....good luck.....I got July of 2022 for delivery.
BUT....there is a hack. Use the longer drive gear from your broken existing mechanism and put it into the mechanism of an an "auto" open one, easily available, last month, for me......Looks like it will work. Winter here, I haven't completed the project, but others have had success with this hack. Search this and other forums for the details....I don't have them handy right now.

FYI. Any replacement of this mechanism is a PITA. I've been working from the inside, the exterior tack maybe be "duck soup" and easier done. I don't know.

Thanks guys. I was able to get the max fan out. It's now laying on the roof. I got the gear box out of it and it is completely stripped. It's not broken apart to the point I can see inside though.

Here is the replacement part I purchased off Amazon.

It appears to be a common part and you may be able to find it cheaper if you shop around.

Thanks for that idea. I considered doing that looks like it wouldn't very too hard of a modification but I was able to get a complete new identical fan from Amazon to my door in less than 2 days so I went that route. We are hoping to use the trailer this weekend and since it is going to be pretty warm I wanted the fan in working order. We do not have A/C. It was a pretty simple swap and I was able to reach everything from one side or the other by standing on a 6 ft ladder.
