Mice

So far we haven't had trouble with mice, but we're concerned about leaving the trailer in our Finger Lakes property because mice have gotten into air conditioning ducts in the cars as well as into our sheds. Any advice?

Yes. Cotton balls saturated with Peppermint Oil keeps them out.

A couple of pie pans with moth balls in them placed under the trailer...assuming you don't have pets or kids who could get into them.

I've heard the peppermint scent dissipates after 30 days and needs reapplying.

Have yet to have mice so I don't know what really works, but we've used dryer sheets, sticky mice traps, mouse poison, and even mothballs... one of those may well work. Takes a week or 2 to clear out the mothball smell come spring. On the plus side, season old mothballs work well to keep the skunks out from under the sheds.

You do not mention how long you expect to leave it empty, but once they get in, mice and squirrels can destroy somethings. I had a new tractor in a barn which all the wiring and rubber was chewed up over one winter, I picked up a black snake and no more problems.

It would be for several months. We're thinking of having a shelter built on our property here, but it is country so the mice are worse

We live in the woods....where the critters out number the human population.

One of our "outbuildings" was their haven...unbeknownst to us when we bought our property. I sealed up the tiny holes and put fresh cab inside. Not a sign of them...since.

We also put it inside the vehicles in the winter...no problems.

Fresh cab smells like balsam fir...100% guaranteed and the company will help you solve problems...if they arise. We get it at Tractor Supply.

Irish Spring bar soap. You don't even have to open the box. Just put a bar in the outside cubbies, perhaps some of the interior cabinets and you'll have no problems and your trailer will smell nice.

We use mothballs and sticky boards for rodent control. We also remove the cushions and mattress from the Escape in the winter and store in the house. There is a company called wildlife control specialties run by a man named Alan Huot. he is a standup guy with very good products. He has a good website. The only thing I have not done on our metal building where we store the 19, that I am going to do before fall is to stuff spun copper wool in the baseboard flanges where I can see light. When they pick the corn and soybeans in the fields adjacent to our yard, the critters really try to move in. I'll trap 25 to 30 mice out of one of the garages in the week after they pick, then it drops off. For poison, which I don't like to use at home but used to use in my work life., I swear by one called Hawk, very effective on rats and mice.

The entrance port of a fixed power cable is the easiest.

Also, in a refrigerator vent and though any gap in the cabinetry. In other trailers there a usually a pile of other paths, but in an Escape with the fully surrounding fiberglass body and generally well-fitted plumbing and wiring penetrations there shouldn't be other ways in, but mice chew cables, hoses, and sealants.

I suppose. My 2008 trailer has the old school metal fridge vent on the trailers side that a mouse couldn't climb up to or get inside. The power cord has a locking flap.
I think, in my case, that mice are most likely to enter during a camping trip, not when stored.
