night time running lights

I just towed my escape 19 (2016) for the first time at night and discovered that the running lights aren't working. The brake lights and signals and flashers are fine but when I turn on the vehicle headlights the rest of the lights on the trailer don't come on. I saw a link to a schematic that shows what all the pins on the 7-pin connector from the truck feed can someone post that link so I can see what has power and what doesn't? Thanks

Read this thread... if you connect pins 3&4 you can test your running lights.

Hi: hughharden... If your hooked to shore power just push a 15 Amp blade fuse into the top two 7 pin slots. The ones on either side of the key slot in the plug. Alf

On a related note, I recently added some self-adhesive reflective strips (from Tractor Supply) to the rear bumper of our 21' just to be sure folks coming up from behind at night can clearly see us even if we have an electrical failure.

Greg, So you know, the pack comes with 4 strips of Red + Silver. I wanted Red + Silver + Red. So I mounted a Red + Silver on each side, then cut the Red section off the other two strips to add. That left me with two Silver strips, so I attached them to either side of the tongue to increase visibility from the front/side for what that might be worth. If nothing else, the tongue reflectors will make it easier to find our camper at night with a flashlight! On a side note, we have to take the propane tank cover off the tanks when the trailer is sitting stored our wrens will build nests on top of the covered propane tanks! Ya gotta love Mother Nature.

That's an excellent idea Dale. I'm stealing it.

BTW, found the set of 4 strips on Amazon for under $10 with free shipping.

When we purchased our trailer we didn't know about other lights we could of gotten . So that is what I did on rear bumper . Wanting to be sure we could be seen better . I also put a couple more reflectors on the rear about half way with VHB tape on the body . Got the idea when I saw commercial trucks using those reflectors . Pat

Rbryan, could you post the Amazon link please. They appear to have a large variety of options. Thanks.

If you would like a reflector that is not noticeable during the day
3M makes a black reflective tape that is black and matches the Escapes bumper and frame paint.
At night headlights make it shine white.
3M reflective sheeting 580 series.

There is also a 680 version and it allows a few seconds to re position if needed before it is permanent . But that is difficult to find.

Have you tried cleaning the connectors and applying a corrosion prevention grease? Perhaps gently squeezing the prongs?

Amazing! It's black but reflects white. I'm honing to look for this stuff. Gotta love 3M.

I found this on Amazon: two 8"x11" pieces for $24! (The rolls of this stuff isn't cheap!)

I found a thread that showed me how to twist the pins on an old fashioned car turn signal flasher. I plug it into the trailer's seven pin connector and my running lights flash until I pull it out (or the battery dies).

I just caution everyone to be careful of reflective tape that changes color at night with headlights. In OREGON only red or yellow colors are allowed to illuminate at the rear at night. You don't want some person to think a car is headed right at them with white lights/reflectors/tape. YMMV.

Although only red (for marker, tail, turn, and stop lamps), yellow (for hazard and turn lamps), and white (reverse only) are allowed on the rear of a vehicle for lamps, reflectors are different. The standard colours for conspicuity strips are red and white, by federal standards in Canada and the United States. It's even required by FMVSS/CMVSS, in those colours, for large trucks.

I'm pretty confident that no jurisdiction in North America would have an issue with red and white conspicuity reflectors on the back of a trailer... but governments can do anything regardless of common sense.
