No 12V power!

This is a bit long, but stay with me.

We had a little mystery while camping, hooked up to Water and Electric. Last night after we went to bed, we heard a noise, all the power went off then came back on. However there was this beeping noise coming from the dinette area where all the power controls are. It took awhile in my sleepy state to find the source. It was the Solar controller. I looked at in and discovered the Inverter was on. That was odd. I turned it off, the beeping stopped so went back to bed.

This morning as we were going through our pack up routine, I disconnected from shore power, put away the cord then went in the trailer to check that the fridge had switched over to propane. There was no power to the fridge. No 12V power anywhere in the trailer. I started trouble shooting and noticed that the batteries were down to 61%!!!!

Now I’m worried. Plugged back into shore power to keep the fridge cold while trouble shooting. All the fuses and breaker looked fine. Battery disconnect was in the on position. The only thing I could think of was the fusible link. Noticed that the solar panel was slowly recharging the batteries. Decided to hook up to see it the truck would supply 12V power to the fridge. Nope.

We were in a place with no cell service or internet. Decided to travel far enough to call Escape and get their input. Got ahold of Dustin who suggested that the battery disconnect switch may have failed. Otherwise my assumption about the fusible link would be the next likely culprit.

Pulled into a shopping center and lo and behold, the battery disconnect switch had failed. The little connecter tab on the back of the switch was loose and if I wiggled it, I had 12V power. Easy fix was to just bypass the switch and screw the two leads together. Once we get home, I will replace the switch. Whew!

Good to hear that all ends well.

I might add that on this trip we have taken our rig on some pretty rough roads. A 45 mile gravel road at the start of the trip, the highways in AZ have some bad potholes, then off-road in the Alabama Hills. Not surprising that something shook loose!

But, solar will still charge your batteries, even if off, so why the drain on batteries other than your inverter?

Jim, when the switch failed, the inverter came on and we had a 1500 W heater plugged in. It took me 5 or more minutes to discover the inverter was powering everything. By that time the batteries took a hit. Once the sun rose, the batteries started to charge again.
