Paneling repair

Not knowing or reading very old threads, I used self-adhesive velcro in several locations on my paneling to attach items. When I went to remove them, the simulated wood film came with, even with careful yanking.


I can always hide the defect with another attached item, using Command strips this time.


A forum search on this problem lists 2 possible solutions.



1. Veneer patch obtained from Lee Valley Tools.

This would be difficult to match grain pattern and color of the existing faux wood paneling.


2. Using furniture nail and scratch filling wax sticks to sketch & blend in a pattern.
Has anyone tried this?


Are there any other suggestions for visual repair of this issue?

You could ask ETI to send you some Oak veneer tape. I picked up a roll at the last Escape rally I went to and find that it hides boo boos fairy well.

Tried wax sticks ( got a pack of four colours ). Sticks out like a sore thumb.
Got oak veneer tape from ETI. If you cut it so that none of the edges are parallel, it fools the eye and pretty much disappears.

Is it self-adhesive? Can you guess how thick it might be?


It does blend in pretty good, if I see your repair area correctly.

ETI sells it by the foot. It isn’t very expensive but if you ship it across the border, you may pay more for shipping than the tape, depending on how much tape you purchase.

It's as thick as a sheet of printer paper, until you take the backing off and then it's half that thick or less. It is self-adhesive.

I'd order enough to cover twice what you need so you can pattern-match the area to be repaired.

You should be able to go to your own trailer and check it out for yourself.
If you lay down in your 19 by the rear wall and look up to the underside of the cabinet, you will see that they used it in this location. If you have not noticed it before...then you have answered your own question as to how well it blends in.
Keep in mind I used a spot light to take the picture so you have a chance in seeing the tape.

I've seen the application of the tape in the area you note. Apparent, but not unsightly.

We ordered a roll of oak veneer tape from Amazon. 50 ft of real wood veneer, for $17, with an iron on adhesive. We used it in the cabinet above the fridge to cover exploration holes. We found Escape did not frame our upper cabinet properly, we had to invest in 4 screws 1-1/2" long to reach the framing that the cabinet hinges could be attached to. The real oak veneer is ever so slightly lighter in color than the inside of the cabinet. A golden oak stain likely would fix this mismatch. But it is inside the cabinet and no one can see it without a flashlight.

At a past rally, I was showing my trailer to some people and a lady asked if the paneling could be stained a darker color.

When I explained that the paneling was not "really" oak paneling but thin wood paneling covered with oak patterned paper, she didn't seem to understand. But I finally convinced her when I showed her places where the touchup tape had been applied by Escape during the trailer build.

Unless you are really looking, the touchup oak tape does disappear.

I'm wondering how many Escape owners aren't even aware of its use. Unless you go looking for it you'll probably never see it.

And, how many have counted the rivets used to attach the awning, vents, etc. on their trailer "that has no rivets" ?

I noticed the tape, or something like it yesterday, when I was installing the 6 red oak trimmed blind valences I reconfigured, to change out from a custom green fabric specified by the original owner. Upside down on the bed, screwing in the valences, I saw the area mentioned. The strip I saw was apparant, but do I care? NAW! I'm asleep, not...at the wheel by then, so no matter to me.

You could probably make a lot of friends by ordering a sizable quantity of that “tape” and then offer it to your acquaintances.

Having been to the rally in Osoyoos three times (first time was 2015), the Niagara Wine Escape, having visited my wife’s cousin near Sudbury frequently and another member who lives near London, Ontario, and having spent much of the summer of 2018 in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Quebec where my maternal grandparents were from I really do not need to be welcomed to the border, and I am well aware of the exchange rate which, for some time, has favored the US dollar over the Canadian. Still, the biggest expense, is shipping charges to cross the border. IMO, Canadians get screwed. Try ordering something from Amazon USA if you have a Canadian address. And if you order the same item from Amazon Canada the price for the same item seems to be higher than just the amount of the exchange rate. And I feel bad for Canadians who, in non-COVID times “snowbird” south and at present are paying @ 25% more for everything.......including gasoline, though even with the exchange rate is less expensive in the States.

The plan would be to order it in quantity, write installation instructions, stock shipping containers, answer phone inquiries and become intimate with the post office. I bet you could make 20-30 dollars . . . A year.
