Thread Seal

Use either Teflon tape or pipe dope. Some are yellow for gas but I'm not sure that it makes a difference. RectorSeal is one brand and Amazon list various brands of yellow plumbers tape. Either should do the job.

I just purchased some fittings and hose at the local propane shop and they told me that the teflon tape was no longer acceptable. This well could have been a story in order to sell me the $25 tube of liquid sealant so do with the info as you see fit!

Definitely played you, it happens to us all.

Try the yellow gas pipe dope first, if you still have a leak use both.

When you get done make sure to soapy water all the connections to check for leaks. I bought a bottle of bubbles with the dauber 9 years ago. Still works good, I keep it on a shelf where I know where it is, saves having to mix something up.
YMMV

a small bloop of Dawn or similar concentrate dish detergent in a cup of warm water works equally well, and is easier for me to find.

Yes, in Washington State anyway the yellow teflon tape doesn't meet code so you are supposed to use pipe dope. Shouldn't have to spend more than $4-5 for it though, unless you're buying a bucket full.
