Protection for Glass Stove Top?
The discussions about the Suburban SDS2 stove recall revealed that the glass top on that cooktop is not replaceable: if you break it, you have to get a new stove.
Well, I got my replacement SDS2, so now I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a solid cover that would protect the glass when the stove isn't being used, and would allow the top be used as part of the counter.
My wife found a padded foil-covered envelope that works, but might not help if something heavy came down on it (say, an iron pan). I'm thinking a cover with something like a Formica top (water-proof) mounted on maybe half-inch rails would do the job, or maybe a wood cutting-board. Anything the right size and clearance exist, or would it have to be hand-made?

In the first six months of ownership we broke the glass top for our SDS2. It was replaced by a cutting board and we never missed that glass top. We just tipped up the cutting board and it sat behind the stove as a backsplash when cooking. Now the SDS2 has been replaced by a Dickinson stovetop that came with a cutting board insert so the countertop is flat. Works for us.
Enjoy,
Perry

No other covers?
I've found that Camco makes a cover that will fit; it's plastic, designed to sit right on the glass:

I was hoping for one with feet that would lift it over the glass, so you could put something heavy on it without fear of breaking.

Resurrecting this:
I wasn't convinced that the Camco, which sits directly on the glass, made sense, so put off looking. Just wondering whether anyone had found or made a better solution.

My solution is to use the stove with the glass top the same way we've used it since new. Our stove gets heavy use because we don't do any outside cooking etc.
If if breaks then an existing wood cutting board would take its' place.

When I make assumptions, they tend to be stupid ones, so I gotta ask...Is the glass top for the SDS2 made of tempered glass?
My experience is that tempered glass is incredibly tough stuff.

I'll take one of those tee shirts also.
Tempered glass is tough and I've rough handled 4' x 6' sheets of it and never accidentally broken one. But it does have an Achilles heel. It's highly stressed and the slightest scratch will release the built in tension and result in the typical shower of glass fragments. So in use, if it is scratched, it's likely going to fracture.
A few years ago we had a lot of car break ins and the news crew posted a video of a thief in action on a busy downtown street. As he walked past the car he flicked a broken spark plug insulator at the window. Because the ceramic is harder than glass and had sharp edges the glass just collapsed in fragments. Without missing a beat the thief just reached in and grabbed whatever got his attention. Folks on the sidewalk not too far away didn't even notice what had just happened. And yet folks continue to leave valuables in plain sight.

Customink dot com will make affordable one-off printed shirts. I've had a couple of message t-shirts made there and was satisfied. Here's one that I came up with:

Thanks for the tip on the fragility of tempered glass when scratched Ron. I think we will cover ours with a towel when the stove is not in use.
I sure do learn some interesting things while reading this forum.

Glass top stove dimensions
We have a soon to be completed 5.0 with the 3 burner, glass top. Does anyone know the dimensions? I would like to sew a padded topper to protect it, before we pick it up.

That's why we'd like to get a solid cover with feet to lift it off the glass. There are cutting boards available, but wife prefers maybe plastic or formica or something.

Yes, our standard situation is to put a tea towel on the glass and then the wood cutting board on top.
