Question for those who "carry" going north

First off, this thread is not a debate or discussion on IF a person should carry while traveling. I am pretty sure those thread discussions have not changed anyones mind, on either side.

What to do with carry weapon when you go into Canada? We plan to pick up our 21 later this year and even though I understand that Escape brings it across for you, we plan to travel into BC and camp for a few weeks. Naturally handguns can not go so where can you leave your gun while you are in Canada? Pay a gun store near the border to store it? Hock it at a pawn shop and get it out of hock after you come back across? There have to be other options, can anyone out there problem solve this.

We can not be the first to have this "issue"

Ask the same question to Yaegers Sporting Goods in Bellingham. Likely they'd store it for you.

Glad to see you're not contemplating making that big mistake some have made, arriving at the border and lying about having a firearm.

You're right, a hand gun is problematic in Canada. It's not as if we're not allowed to own and possess them, we are and do. It's the carrying them around in public that's the major difference.

You can store it in several places near the border (the IGA in Sumas for one). It's a common practice. Be aware however that the Canadian Border officials are professionals, and they take their work seriously. They will already know you have a CHL, and they will not only ask if you're carrying, but also if you even brought it with you on the trip and left it on the US side. Just be straight with them and there are zero issues. And of course, don't even think about taking prohibited items across.

I understand pawing can be a huge problem because if you're not a resident of that state, you can't get it back.

I left mine (legal, retired cop, ok?) with a buddy in Idaho but planned to take it to a gun shop to "clean it" for a couple weeks. I read that a hardware store on the US side, probably where you'll pick up your trailer rents lockers. Don't have a name but you can Google it easy enough. Might be the IGA.

Wouldn't leaving it at home just for the duration of the trip be an option?

Unless somebody has specific knowledge about locations near the border where a weapon can be securely stored, I think this topic has run its course.

Glen, With a ton of respect for you, I disagree with you that this thread has run its course. It started out with the question of how to store your guns (if you have them with you) before entering Canada. How to comply with Canadian law. Why would you shut this thread down? Americans need to hear about Canadian restrictions and figure out how to comply. The penalty is for non compliance is very high. You could lose your tow vehicle, trailer, get a very big fine with a possible jail sentence too. Canada is not an extension of the US. Please be respectful of their laws.

The biggest problem I have had in crossing Canadian / US borders is the fact that fact that I am not carrying firearm weapons. As an Alaskan resident, the custom agents find this hard to believe.

"No sir, I do not have any firearms with me. I am not a hunter .... however I get my Caveman YaYa's off by saltwater fishing and probably have at least 3000 #5 salmon hooks and half that of halibut circle hooks, targeting both species in Alaska. None of which I have brought to Canada"

"Very well Son, (he is 35+ and I am 66) please park in lane 2 for a search"

I can't help but smirk .... knowing I am clean. Although a 2 hr. search can be stressing.... but well I am asking to be admitted to their country after all.

Come to Canada and enjoy ... you'll be safer than even very small town USA.

Oh did you know that you are only allowed to bring in a 3 days supply of food? I have a wonderful story of my self traveling by boat with a months supply of canned goods and a Canadian Customs Agent ... if anyone is interested.

Bon Appetite,

Tom

Is the pun intended or unintended?

rbryan4,
When I searched IGA in Sumas my searches turned up what appeared to be a grocery store chain. What type of facility is IGA?

I suggest you google Bromleys market IGA border and customs. My hit on this search told me everything I wanted to know about crossing the border and about storage of anything a person would not intend to take into Canada. Personally I am a close quarters hatchet man myself. Never gets a hassle.

States and the feds consider an RV as a domicile. Leave it inside and you're fine. Little to no reason to pack unless one spends much time camping in Detroit.

This is a diversion, but I'd really like to know more about the three day supply of food. Can that be a new thread?

3 days of food

Does the 3 days include to-go helpings of poutine?
Last trip across the border going North the only comment from the delightful lady was that we may want to sign our freshly renewed passports before returning US.
