removing Maxxfan help

I was removing my Maxxfan to waterproof the circuit board and this piece fell out and I didn't see where it came from. Any help?

Looks like a plastic spacer? Perhaps not needed if the fan still operates without it?

That is a spacer that goes around the shaft of the crank that opens and closes the lid - you have to put it in place before reattaching the black plastic knob.
