Repairing a Maxxfan Deluxe
the power lift/close on my Maxxfan deluxe started to misbehave abouta year ago where when it was closing, the hood motor (not the fan) would run on for 10-15 seconds after it was fully closed. early on our latest trip, the lift failed completely where it would not raise the hood, it would just keep turning the handle.
I diassembled things, and determined that the motor assembly was fine, but little gearbox that actually lifts the hood was stripped... I took it apart kinda backwards as I was investigating.
1) didn't need to remove the inside outer trim ring at all. I didn't need to remove the inner control panel ring, either.
2) Maxxfan replacement procedure for this fan talks about fixing it from the top side while the fan is still installed on the RV but as our fiberglass tops aren't walkable, thats not really practical.
so... my suggestion is, remove the screen on the inside, remove the fan (small allen screw on shaft). remove the knob (phillips screw inside knob)
manually lift the hood (can do it by lifting the inside of the hood with a plastic tool like a large comb, or a soup ladle handle). climb a 7'+ step ladder remove the 2 screws on the side, move ladder to other side, and remove those screws too. now you can lift the hood assembly off the vehicle, there's two molex connectors to unplug, one for the fan motor, and one for the lift motor.
put the hood assembly on a work table, remove the two screws that hold the inner shield to the top of the hood. press the two lift arms together so they disengage with the slots in the top, now you can pivot the lid all the way back and see the mechanism.
unhook the spring from one of the lift arms, unscrew the two screws that hold the gearbox thing to the base at oen side of the shaft of the lift arms. unscrew the nut and bolt that hold the spring to the gear assembly. follow the supplied instructions to install the replacement. put the assembled fan hood back on the roof, plugging in the two molex plugs, and securing the two screws on each side.
the part you need is 10-20281K-1AF. etrailer has this for $14, and ships fast (ordered friday, recieved monday).
OH, before you reinstall the hood, with the fan blades removed, and the hood upside down, dribble a little light oil (I used Triflow, from a dropper bottle) down the fan motor shaft and spin it by hand, this cured a squeak mine was starting to develop at low speeds.
I probably should have taken pictures, but I was concentrating on fixing it.
