Replacing outside light
Almost came back from Az unscathed but broke the light above sewer outlet & scraped side of my 2017 17b. Ordered a replacement but am asking for guidance on diy. Know to turn battery switch off before connecting wires but wonder about helpful hints on removal of old unit. Also about recommended sealant after replacement. Thank you!

Proflex to seal the hole and clear silicone around the top and sides to seal. Two screws attach and you may have to cut with a razor the old sealant, clean the area and install the new one.

Eeeek.  No silicone! I think ETI used clear Proflex, but never Silicone.

It's Proflex clear on Ten Forward. Musta changed under ownership. Reace and I had a long talk about silicone sitting at a picnic table.

How do you know this? What is your source? How do you know it's not Proflex or something other caulk?

I use Proflex in my review of caulked lights and around the AC etc when I ready our Escape each spring. If I have to reseal larger flat surfaces I use butyl tape. Both are reasonably easy to remove at a later time if necessary. Silicone, not so good.

Back in 2017 when we replaced our passenger side window we asked Reace what to use as sealant on the top channel. His reply was "We just use silicone in this area." ...

Yes, I should have said clear Proflex, but the small amount needed for a light may not justify a whole tube if you have something else open.....I was not saying silicone caulk the entire trailer, just the light!!

Silicone sticks like the dickens to anything thereby giving you a false sense of security, BUT---it-- over time, like sooner than you expect, silicone develops tiny air holes in the dried goop that produces leaks. Then you have to pay the devil to scrape it off. (My 2 cents.)

I have used 3M 5200 for various small jobs with great results. It is a bit of a pain to remove if required at a later date.

I'd spend $10 on one tube of Proflex to fix one light rather than use silicone anywhere on the exterior of my trailer. Silicone is the Devil's spawn. Obviousy YMMV.

3M 5200 and its faster curing variations are great at sealing and adhesion, especially in wet areas. But they should be considered permanent due to the difficulty to break the adhesion and remove. I've used it on my boat on stainless steel that might otherwise need to be welded in place.
I am considering 5200 to attach supplemental anchors for my solar panel - as opposed to drilling holes for the ETI supplied bolts. I'll report back if I do.

5200 is nearly permanent
Caution: 5200 is tough stuff. I've dealt with it on a sailboat. Nearly impossible to remove. 4200 is maybe a better choice.

I replaced the light today & it was not fun to remove whatever was used as sealant. I used a plastic putty knife, then goo gone. Cleaned surface with alcohol. It was heart wrenching to have to drill 3 new holes into the trailer as old ones didn’t align. Filled old holes with caulk as well as new ones. Then caulked along outer edges. Yippee!

The law of the hoarder says that now you need to immediately buy another light that’s identical to the one you installed. The thought is that if you have to replace it again you’ll not have to drill three holes next time. The reality is that
you will never need it and someday you can give it to someone and feel good about it or put it on the free tarp. And secondly you will not be able to find it when you need it.
