Second spare on a 19

I have identified a rear hitch for the back to add one additional full spare. Parts ordered. However the second tire will be pitched and likely rub the other spare thats secured to the bumper. I will attempt to attached photos. Any others have a clearer path to add another spare? Now if you ask me why a second spare, the short answer is I am soon off to Panama from Calif.

Maybe reducing the air pressure in your spares will improve fitment? I presume you’ll have a small air pump to reinflate if you need to use them.
Personally, I’d just take a plug kit and a good air pump and skip the extra spare. Doesn’t help with sidewall damage though so a bit more risk.

P.S. Sounds like an awesome trip - I’m jealous. Hope it goes well!

Consider a mount under the tongue with a winch. Will be much better for weight distribution. I did one on a 21 for another owner when I needed the rear bumper for a mini-split condenser.

Tires are a good idea to take.

Funny story, I have grandparents who we're of a certain age (born 1920) and they were friends with another couple about the same age. They all lived near Chicago. Well, after coming home from WWII, this other couple decides to buy a surplus truck from the army. The plan was to drive said truck to Patagonia. They used the truck to carry a bunch of stuff including a full set of spare tires.

Somewhere in Mexico, they got the US consulate to scratch up yet another set of tires for the truck. In Panama, they needed even another set. The consul told them he would help get the tires from the army, but only under the condition that they head north from that point on. Thus ended the adventure.

I'm sure the roads are better now than they were in 1948, but you're wise to consider more than one spare.

the bummer re the tongue is how low the tire will be and potential for catching the ground or a rock.

I bet there were many stories. Thats a lot of bad tires too. The CIA made sure Panama has a barrier between it and its former country Colombia. Darien Gap 100KM of bush and criters. Bad guys too. GM ran a bunch of Corvairs thru it with help of 4x4 trucks. Few now unless you have a bad ass 4x4 with serious mud tires attempt it. Patagonia would have been awesome too.

The tire sits partially within the frame and installation still had over 11” of clearance. There is likely other stuff lower than that.

This receiver spare tire mount is intended for front of vehicle application and has less tilt of the mount than others designed for rear mount applications. Pictures on the product page showing actual installations make it look like there would be sufficient clearance from the existing spare.

We have a more convoluted solution that serves to carry both our bikes and spare for the TV.
https://www.escapeforum.org/forums/a...3&d=1601940752
This utilizes a dual 2" receiver adapter going into the Escape hitch. The bottom receiver has a flat "step/platform" - $30 from Harbor Freight. The top receiver has our Thule bike rack with a spare tire U-bolt around it to hold the spare in place as it rests on the step/platform below. A Master Lock Python cable lock along with locking anti-rattle bolts keep everything snug and secure. No it's not pretty but it gets done what we need. Nearing 10K miles of towing and no issues with it yet (touch wood). Hope you find a solution that meets your needs.

There are a few potential locations for a spare, especially for a second spare that doesn't need to be conveniently accessible. The stock spare bracket on the rear bumper could be replaced by two brackets side-by-side. I would get down on the ground and see where it might go up against the floor between the frame rails. Without a front storage box one could go between the body and the propane tanks (over the stock 19' battery location). There are other bracket possibilities if other components (propane, battery) can be shifted. The tow vehicle may have space and load capacity for a trailer spare

good points. The Land Cruiser roof rack can add one more. I have a steel replacement RR on the LC with 400 pounds capacity. I have removed the tongue storage box but need a smaller version for wheel chocks, locks etc. batts will be inside.

Yes I do have those for my truck. Two spares for it too. When a flat occurs its often at a risky place so the less time spent fiddling with finding and correcting on the spot in some rather edgy places the better.

2nd spare

When we went to the end of Baja in our 19, we carried our second spare under the bed. It just fits through the doors and when pushed to the back left lots of room for our clothes storage baskets.

Just a thought

Our spare now fits nice and tight up inside the tongue. It does hang down a bit but no lower than the jack base. I was always afraid that someone was going to rear end the trailer and push it through the shell.

excellent point! Pushed thru the back certainly would be a big bummer. I am going to return the hitch and go ahead and wing it up on top of the Cruiser bad boy rack with the Toyota steel wheel for the truck.

by the way, did you weld a piece of steel to secure the wheel to the tongue?
