Any suggestions pertaining to Escape 19 security in campgrounds? Referring
to best way to keep my trailer locked down to prevent removal from camp site.

1. Stay home
2. Big, mean guard dog chained to the frame.
3. Robust hitch lock
4. Wheel Lock Clamp Boot Tire Claw, Auto Car Anti Theft Lock - Heavy Duty
5. Remove all trailer tires, chain and lock them together, hide them somewhere.
6. Chains through tires with locks.
7. Apple Airtag or GPS device on/in trailer to keep track if its whereabouts.
8. See forum for hidden switch technique to disable electrical system. Do a forum keyword search. Eggscape has done some posts, I recall.
9. Search forum for anti- theft suggestions.

Anything can happen, but trailer theft in a campground seems rare. More likely pilfering of left out camp items.

More danger getting to and from the campground then in it.

I like the idea of removing the tires. But it will slow up the pull in cocktail drinking and the pull out coffee drinking by at least a couple.

My solution is to have good insurance and not worry about what might happen. Plus, we have a Shih Tzu who will lick anyone who lets him.

To find Eggscape’s modification habberdabber referred to, go to the thread I linked to above, go to Eggscape’s post there, click the link at the bottom of his post, then find post #91. Simple as that. Haha.

We use the Proven Industries hitch lock that also locks the safety chains (model #2178-A). By no means foolproof, but might have a thief decide to move on to an easier target. We bought the lockable X-chocks that go between the tires too, but we’ve never used them. One of several pre-pickup purchases that are still new-in-box.

Edit: FYI, others have pointed out that Proven Industries has an upgraded puck lock for their lock system that makes it more difficult to defeat (i.e., harder to drill through)

Make friends with the other camper next to you.

Make a snack, like brownies and sharing befriends people and they watch out for you.
And buy a big hitch lock, chain through the tires, etc etc

I also have the Proven Industries hitch lock 2178A. It’s a very robust lock and that’s the extent of my security measures to date.

What is a greater fear, someone stealing your trailer or someone stealing your tow vehicle?

When I travel I don't worry as much about my trailer as I do my TV when it sits in a parking lot while I shop.

According to this article over a 24 month period spanning 2020-2022 about 80 rvs were reported stolen in US and Canada. About half of that was in Texas and California. British Columbia for instance reported 3 in the two year period. Most Provinces /States were in the 0-2 category.

By far the prime spots are storage yards and businesses. Campgrounds are a rarity. Homes are minor. It appears that your tow and camper are more likely to be stolen while parked at a store while shopping than from a campground.

82% were bumper pull travel trailers. Few were 5th wheels because the hitch is a deterrent. (To get a more accurate picture you would have to know what % of rvs are 5th wheels.)

I enjoyed this post. It’s never been good for me to worry about something that likely will not happen. I’ve never known anyone who has lost a travel trailer but I’ve known some folks who have lost ATVs and a couple boats ( boats from storage areas). I’ve been wishin 100 feet of a cooler theft in a campground. That happened about 35 years ago. I usually encourage folks to put things of considerable value in their tow rig at night if possible. Most theft crimes I’ve been around are from unsecured, rarely inspected sites with low “human contact”

To refine this a bit:
Stay around your campsite. Cook lots of good things for your neighbors. Walk the general vicinity of your campsite picking up bit of trash every morning. This results in your becoming good friends with the campground host. Let the host know what your plans are. We do keep an eye on things and knowledge is power (along with fresh apple pie).

I also recommend the Proven Industries lock. I bought it because I store my trailer in a storage lot. I do use the lock at campgrounds also. Why take a chance on having your trailer stolen! The price of the lock is cheap compared to the aggravation of losing my trailer.

My thoughts exactly
Our trailer is stored in a very secure storage lot and I am very comfortable with the theft prevention measures I have taken on our trailers. Parked next to us is a toy hauler (no hitch locks) with an ATV & snowmobile parked behind on a flat deck. I think the attraction of that rig alone will deter any interest in our trailers. LOL

Recently I saw someone post a good idea on Facebook , when they put their trailer in storage they take the tag off of it and put one on that says 'Call 911 I've been stolen.' At a campsite it would be Yeti coolers and E bikes I would be most worried about. If you deter a thief in many ways they usually move on to an easier target.
