Smelly Hot Water Tank

Draining the hot water tank in our 19 there was a very noticeable smell as the water ran out. Smelled like a swamp. Thinking we should run some diluted bleach through it and hope that fixes it. Anyone else had this issue?

Thanks for that link. I put in a new aluminum anode this past spring. I'm going to turf that one and get a magnesium one and re-sanitize the system. Hopefully that will fix it.

Also, I went searching for a new magnesium rod. Our local RV service place doesn't have any and have never heard of "magnesium rods". So I went further afield and contacted a large RV centre in Prince George, BC. They also have only aluminum rods and also said they never did have any magnesium ones. Called another big outfit in PG who said they do have a magnesium rod but have never heard of one causing a smelly tank. We should get into the Guinness Book of Records as the only people on Earth that have ever had a smelly hot water tank caused by an aluminum anode rod. GEESH!!!!

It's hard to believe that Suburban would have installed anode rods that are almost unobtainium. Somethin' just ain't right here...........

The common camco rods are either aluminum or magnesium and are so noted on the package. They look the same in the package. It’s a little harder to find the magnesium rod but they do exist. I’m getting two to three years out of a rod but as previously posted, I often drain between trips and have not had stinky water unless we get a water source high in sulfur. I bought my last magnesium rod in a camper supply place.
