Spare Tire Carrier - Socket Size
Hi there,
We will pickup our 21C in about a month :-)
Question re spare tire carrier...for removing the spare tire from the back of the trailer, do you know which socket and size we need?
Is it the same 13/16" 6-point deep socket we would used for lug nuts at the sides of the trailer?
Thanks!

It is. Mine just happens to be sitting on my workbench so it was a quick and easy answer.

Only if you have steel wheels. Aluminum rims use 3/4 lug.

I have steel wheels on my 2017 21C. I have to carry two deep sockets as the lug nuts on the trailer are 13/16" and the lug nuts on the spare is 3/4".
As you can tell from the answers, Escape doesn't always do things the same from year to year. Sometimes, from trailer to trailer are different. You may want to take both sizes with you in case you need to use the spare.

Great trailers it seems but these detail oversights are disappointing to read.

Our 2019 Escape 19 has aluminium wheels and 13/16 lug nuts. I am surprised that the 21 would be different.

Universal Lug Wrench
$12 on Amazon. Fits in my "tool box" (portable file storage) and rides in front box with other items used regularly. Can use a foot for leverage to remove tight lugs.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use the same nuts on the spare as on the axles, and carry only one socket for them? You can get five nuts for ten bucks. Or are the studs on the spare carrier a different thread size from the wheel studs in the hubs?

I used to use one of those to swaps wheels on the race Honda. It was fast because it can be held in a gloved hand and spun, especially at ice races (an icy glove is a pretty good low-friction bearing ). Now I use a speeder handle or a cordless impact wrench, and a breaker bar for more torque, but I don't carry those things on a trip.

What is consistent is that the wheel studs in the hubs always have the standard thread for that Dexter axle, which is ½"-20, so nuts are available with a hex size of 3/4", 13/16", and even 7/8". The largest nuts might not fit in the wells in some alloy wheels, but the smaller cone-seat nuts will work on all cone-seat wheels (which means all steel wheels and most alloy wheels).
