Storage

I use the shallow cupboard under the sink for canned goods. I bought these spring-loaded bars that are supposed to keep stuff where it belongs. They don't.
I even fastened plastic bumpers to the inside of the cupboard such that the ends of the tubes fit over them.
This is the result after a bit of washboard.
Finally gave up and got a short bungee that I can lace through cupboard handles.
I'm particularly worried about spilling the cooking oil. For some reason the companies that make the oil, use bottles without secure screw-on caps. They screw on, sort of. Will be looking for maybe a fuel bottle at Mountain Equipment. Any other suggestions welcome.

Glenn we bought some baskets from the dollar store and keep all the oils and canned food in then, we also put the non slip shelf liner under then and this has worked well for us even back in our off roading and camper days.

Cheers

We use several plastic bins in all cupboards, especially by the door where we store food cans, etc. We also store cooking oil under the sink in the shallow cupboard, but don't have a bin there, and have never (yet!) had a problem. After seeing your picture, I'm worried now!

Maybe we'll make something like a strap across the front of the cabinet, but behind the door, to keep stuff in place if the door comes open? Maybe a bungee and a couple of hooks??

We use bins under the bed for storage but not under the sink. That said, after our first long trip (and after forgetting to latch the refrigerator door ... ), we bungee the dual cupboards closed and it's saved our bacon a couple of times. A problem arises when you don't have two doors together (like under the refrigerator), then finding a place to hook the bungee becomes an issue. Still working on that one.

Been there, done that. For what it is worth, from experience, it takes a full roll of Viva paper towels and lots of dishwashing soap to clean up a pint of olive oil. I now keep the bottle in the same location, but in a tall coffee cup. I've still found it on its side, so I may velcro the cup to the floor of the cabinet!

The two compartments above the wheel wells are very tricky to utilize on the 17". I firmly believe in keeping items in plastic bins but most bins are either too big or too small for that space.

Have you look at Nalgene bottle for storage? I rarely store full-sized cooking supplies in the trailer. I use small containers and refill whenever I can. I keep all my cooking liquid in small bottles and then in this container:

Amazon.com: Rubbermaid 1776474 8-Pc. Modular Canisters Food System: Food Storage Containers: Home & Kitchen

Which I can grab and move it around when I need. I would like a better solution than that but it will do for the time being.

As for cans, are those for the trip or backup? I have a backup food stash which is stored under the bench seat. Those are items well-sealed and not used on a planned trip. For the rest that I do plan to use in a trip I keep it in a basket that fit under the sink.

For all that storages in the 17", these two shallow cupboards give me the most headache.

ETA: I do have the luxury to unload an reload the trailer for every trip. And we are still weekenders so we don't usually have to bring a lot of food. We are yet to meet the challenge I guess.

You beat me to the punch. We do this for a few things, like dish soap too. You can throw Nalgene bottles around, smash them on the ground, and they still won't leak.

Do you have a time machine, as akoaoka just mentioned it moments ago?

Hi Jim,
I actually stole the Nalgene idea from you! I swear by their water bottle but I just recently look into their storage bottles. For dish soap I keep reusing a bottle from Campsuds and fill it with some other biodegradable brand now and it still function well after 15 years!

Glad to hear that thievery works for you.

One nice thing about Nalgene containers too, is that you can get them in rectangle shapes, which pack easier, or in tough squirt bottle too. I hear you on the Campsuds bottles, I have been using the same one in my backcountry kitchen kit for at least 20 years now. Good tough plastic on them too.

I looked them all over at MEC but didn't see a squirt bottle version. Has it got a name or model number that I can search for?

Wow good to know that it will survive at least another 5 years!

Not sure of a model, but I thought we bought them at MEC. It came with a pack of about 6 or more small storage containers. We have had ours (two of them) for many years now.

For that, you only lose one hand, not both.

I've spilled olive oil before because of the crappy tops, and lamp oil, but the worst by far was the small pint bottle of bleach that leaked out the top just a tiny bit. Bleach will badly corrode almost anything. It's now carried inside a tall plastic tub, along with the lamp oil.
