Suburban SDS2 Cooktop Burner Grates

Hello,
We have a brand new Suburban SDS2 cooktop and before turning it on for the first time we noticed black flakes coming of the burner grates. When we turned grates upside down the surface looked damaged. Is this normal? Thanks!

The grates get bounced around which can chip the ceramic at the contact points. Not a big deal to take care of - a little sandpaper to clean the surface and some high heat gloss black paint will put it back to like new.

You're right that the paint will off gas when exposed to flame.

But they don't do it forever. I have turned on the cooktop with the vent hood on high and let the grate off gas for a while, then not worried about it afterwards. Other than buying new grates each time they get a chip, I don't know another way.

JohnP, first of all we love our escape trailer and would definitely get another one. Your Suburban SDS2 3001AST cooktop is very dangerous. The aluminum tubes that feed the burner are very flimsy and the tubes for some people have come snapped from the factory.
On my cooktop it took one year for vibration to snap them off and this has happened to several other people. The burner valves are heavy and are only mounted to sheet metal which allows the vibration and their is not a fix for this. They will only replace your cooktop and it will have the same dangerous flaw.

With this stove being brand new I would call Escape/Suburban and ask that they send new grates as the stove is under warranty. I would also ask them what they are doing about the bigger problem of the burner tubes underneath coming loose which could be a potentially dangerous situation. This appears to be a design defect.

Great idea; thanks, Pat.

I did use it on the step in a couple places. But I would like to do the grates.

You won't be disappointed. If you were closer I would offer to lend a hand on the install.

To cover the hole I am going to put in a spacer on the front and back and then cover the spacer and seam with some aluminum angle all the way around . It will look great and only I will know. Thanks so much or talking me into the switch. This kind of repair is actually fun for me but I would have rather not have had to do it in first place.

I have not received my call back from Carl yet so I can let him know what I think the problem is. He may be away or putting out other fires.

I will give it a few more days then try phoning him again.

You will love the Dickinson. I have one in my 19 and it was installed by Escape in 2018.
