Suction Cups on Camper Shell

Has anyone ever used a small suction cup on the outside of the camper body when set up and not traveling? Wonder if it would cause any problem to the gelcoat finish. Not looking to hang anything heavy, maybe 8 oz. weight.

I use them to hang party lights (also known as Christmas lights). They don't hurt anything...especially since your gelcoat has a coat of wax on it, right?

Yep, they work great to hold the water hose up, as a place to hang the dog leash or trash bag or whatever. Very handy and no harm to gel coat. The ones from Ikea are real grippers and if you forget to take it off it will still be there when you arrive at the next campground. There's another brand too that Fred Morón has (he gave me a couple) and they are awesome!

I found a suction cup shower head holder at the local Tru Value hardware store so that if I were to take a shower outside, it would be a "hands free" exercise.

The Suction Hooks from Lee Valley Tools are great we use them in several places outside, have forgot them on the trailer and still there when we arrived. We also use them in the bathroom and on the door on the inside.

How about a bigger suction cup?

I came across a larger suction cup antenna mount that looks interesting but I can't help but think that it would cause some stress on the gelcoat. What are everyone's thoughts on something larger, like this:

Seems like this would make it so simple to deploy a 4-5' piece of 1/2" PVC with a cell phone antenna.

I think it would work just fine with the large surface area. You aren't yanking it off under suction. You just release the handle to relieve the suction when you want to remove.

On the first 17B, I tried a heavy-duty 4-cup glass panel-moving suction cups, thinking I could devise a method for attaching various heavy items to the outside trailer. The unit held extremely well. However, unless the attachment location was super clean, it tend to leave a mark. Four suction marks actually.

I now use a very flexible suction cup holder, designed for using a handheld shower head, for holding the external shower faucet. While not as rugged, it doesn't leave a mark. But then, it doesn't need to hold anything heavy.

FWIW, we also use 3" (black rubber) suction cups on our solar panel, which we only deploy when we need it, by putting it up on the roof (on the Escape 21, at the back; when we had Casitas, at the front).

No harm to the gelcoat, which is coated with wax anyway, right?
