Fast forward several years and I have a Dodge Durango with the Pentastar V6 and an 8 speed transmission. It tows our 3,000 lb Scamp easily and the difference in perceived power is amazing! Torque start down low in the RPM band and the 8 speeds really help.
The PowerTech 3.7 L was probably the earlier V6 in this case, used in the 2002-2012 Dodge/Ram 1500. It was replaced by the Pentastar 3.6 L, which is still the current engine. While both are V6's and they are of nearly the same displacement, they are very different in design and construction. There was an even earlier Chrysler 3.8 L V6 (used in Jeeps but not Ram pickups) which had even less power; I find it amusing that each engine in this sequence is trivially smaller than the previous, but substantially more powerful as the design moved from pushrod to SOHC to DOHC.

The transmission is probably a significant part of the perceived different in engine performance, but there is a substantial power output difference, particularly at higher engine speeds. This experience illustrates why advice based on experience with outdated vehicles and engines isn't of much value in making decisions about current vehicles and engines.

We have been towing our 29 with a KIa sorento v6 for four years. We live in BC lots of mountains, no problems. Your choice seems more than adequate.

I have the V-6 ECO Diesel in a 2015 Jeep GC towing an Escape 21. The only problem I have had is on the long uphill pull heading West out of Denver. I found that I had to use the paddle shift to hold the RPMs at about 3500 to avoid overheating. Other wise, great combination. Now have 132 k miles on the Jeep and hope to get many more.

There’s a great function on the Ram website where you can put in your VIN and it spits out the payload and max towing capacity for your specific truck.

Example:

Results
2019 RAM 1500 BIG HORN LONE STAR CREW CAB 4X2 5'7" BOX
8-Speed Automatic 8HP75 Transmission

MAX PAYLOAD
1850.00LBS
MAX TOWING
11540.0LBS

Been there, only thing that has changed much for me is the "young".

Mine was a Ford Maverick with 3 kids pulling a "Shell Lake" fiberglass tri-hull

The Ram Eco Diesel is a 6 cylinder. It is one of the best towing vehicles out there. We average 16-17 mpg towing our Escape 21 in Washington, back & forth over the Cascade Mountain Range. The hemi V8 supposedly has even more towing power but the 3.0 liter Eco Diesel is amazing.

V-6

My friend has a Ram 1500 tradesman with a v-6 I’m not sure of the rear end but it’s a very basic truck .He pulls a 19 ft Hurricane boat about 3500 lb It pulls great down in flat Florida 65 mph no problem. .
So if this will be your only vehicle and only tow a little the V-6 should be fine This is not your Fathers V-6 this is a lot stronger more torque and Hp then many V-8 of a few years back Jim W

I pulled a friends bass boat with my 72 Ford Pinto. Guess I was younger, stupider, and broker.
He had a boat, and I had a hitch, so why not! We did survive somehow.
