Turn Signal Problem

I have had some problems with my right signal light. It does not work! The rear lights work but no turn signal. With all of the lights off and the key out of the car there is a really faint light on the LEDs on the back of the trailer. Any suggestions?

Dual-filament bulbs, and perhaps some LED units with a common ground shared between two light sections (one for tail, one for stop/turn) can do interesting things when the common connection (which is normally to ground) is interrupted. However, in this case, I don't understand where the power would be coming from, with the tow vehicle lights off, since the turn and tail light circuits are completely separate from the trailer's power circuits.

Is it possible that your tow vehicle does not shut off power to the 7-pin when turned off? If shorted, this would be a power source for the lights when the vehicle is shut off. This does not explain the signal light not working.

I would first clean and check the connections on the 7-pin connector on both the tow and trailer sides, as well as the connections and bulbs (assuming in 2007 the did not use LED yet). Other than that, it pretty much has to be something in the wiring.

Faint glow

The first couple of years we had our Escape I had the faint glow of tail lights with light switch off and trailer plugged into tow vehicle. I had a couple of self caused electrical issues this spring and the repair included a clean up of all the pins and a new ground wire. Now there is no glow and lights work fine. You may have some kind of a back feed off of your hot lead from car battery that is energizing to tail lights. Is there an excess of moisture or dielectric grease on your light plug and plug receiver and is your ground solid and clean? That's where I would start. In the immortal words of my fine brother in law who passed from this world way too soon, "Them grounds will mess you up."

Jim and Dave are both getting at the same answer to my question of where the power is coming from: there is no legitimate source, so there must be some failure of separation of circuits. There must be wires rubbing together, or dirt bridging contacts, or something of that sort. Bad ground connections will make the situation even more confusing, and may keep the turn signal from working, but cannot by themselves cause a light to come on when there is no power on any of the lighting circuits.

Some things are hard to diagnose remotely. If I had this situation in my driveway, I would be checking connections - particularly at the plug connecting the trailer to tug - for voltage and for resistance to ground.
