Uncomfortable edge
Has anyone else noticed that the laminate edging seems to have gotten sharper and when placing your arms/hands along the table edge or kitchen counter, there is some pain involved? Trying to figure out how to shave, plane, sandpaper, stell wool, knife edge the laminate to make it more comfortable? Any ideas?

If you are talking about the runner, these work pretty well.

They may make a single edge one, you'd have to look. Can probably get one at Woodcraft or similar.

When I built my table I used 23/32 plywood. That's what you get now instead of 3/4". The edging in 3/4 inch wide. So if the channel the trim strip fits into is in the middle of the plywood, the edge is a little bit proud. I noticed this and set the router a little tiny bit lower than halfway center and the edge turned out flush. However, when I replaced the light trim on my counter and flip up table with brown trim, it was proud. So I took a good razorblade knife with a new flat single edged razor blade and about 25 degrees or so, "planed" the trim strip. It only took a few minutes and did not affect the laminate at all. Worked for me and made me comfortable which is my goal each and every day of my life.

So that 1/32 is making the difference, thanks for the heads up. I'll try my buck knife or the trimmer to hone the edge.

If trimmed flush to the laminate, it is easy to ease the edges with fine sandpaper on a sanding block.

I did not sand anything on the counter and did not have to on the new table when I adjusted the slot cutter bit a liitle lower in the router to get a flish finish. But you're right, a little light sanding would do. The good news is the color goes all the way through: on mine anyhow.

If the vinyl edge is installed perfectly flush, no edge treatment like sanding is needed. I would bet Escape installs it a bit proud, then trims it flush to the top of the laminate, leaving a sharp edge. Being vinyl, it won't likely do harm, and would round over a bit with time, but a light sanding of the corner would speed this up.

Laminate shops use a guided router blade that cuts a beveled edge on corners. Can also use a fine flat file to take the edge off but push only on an angle down and away from the top laminate. I'd go slow and gentle with a file - Formica is brittle and unforgiving.

First: I'd check Jims propane tanks before I'd tackle sanding the edge. Could be his propane is low and its time to replace the trailer.

Hi: Steve Clark... On our table it's not the laminate edge that grates on my arm its the edging around it. I'm so used to living on the edge I hardly notice it any more!!! Alf
