Use common weatherstrip on Dometic 2530 door gasket???

We have a 2010 17B with a Dometic 2530 refrigerator. The door gasket is old and very hard. It not only fails the $1 test, but would probably fail a ten dollar bills test. Fixing it is my first step to improving performance.

Given that it is difficult to find and install a replacement gasket and that they cost as much as $200, has anyone experimented with finding a very thin weatherstrip and applying it to the surface of the original gasket? How did it work? Problems to be aware of? What weatherstrip did you use?

Don't use a common weatherstrip. You need a fridge gasket. They're made of a far more durable material than weatherstripping. It not only seals better but can be scrubbed when it's dirty.

As you found out, the OEM ones for Dometic fridges are ridiculously expensive. They charge what they do because they can. There are some alternatives however. Check out BA Refrigeration. They specialize in replacement parts and gaskets for residential and commercial fridges, but they will also make them for RV type fridges. They make them custom to fit, with welded seam corners.

They are much more reasonably priced than Dometic. You can also order a sample ring, and then just choose the profile that's closest to what you have. The most critical thing to get right is the thickness. If it's a hair too wide, that's OK. Just don't get one that's too thick or the door won't close properly.

Here's a link to their site and sample ring ordering page.

Thanks for the information, it is great. I have already sent them an email and plan to update this email with my results.

This is an example of the wonderful people and information available here.

UPDATE: BA refrigeration only supplies parts for large commercial refrigerators and freezers. No RV parts.

They suggested Fox Appliance, but they do not handle any RV parts either.

Back to the drawing board.

I wasn't suggesting they handle "RV parts".

Order a gasket sample ring. Pick the gasket closest to the one from your fridge. Measure, and order. While they don't supply parts for RV refrigerators, they do make CUSTOM gaskets. As long as the profile of the gasket you choose is close to yours, it will work. It's irrelevant whether it's for an RV fridge or another type. They'll make a gasket of ANY size you specify in the order form on the website. If you can't find a gasket profile in the sample ring that is anywhere near yours - THEN it's back to the drawing board.
