Wall Thickness

Here is a cross section of a piece I cut it off my trailer wall for a set of taps, for your viewing pleasure.

The shell is 3/16"+, the added foam is 1/2"+, and the vinyl backed foam is 3/8".

Thanks Jim. The new insulation is clearly visible - quite a bit thicker than the refectix was.

Even before the Reflectix, and used in my trailer, was just another layer of the 3/8" foam without the vinyl layer.

Lots of cushioning for that Alf.

The 1/2" white foam is a lot denser than the vinyl backed foam. Kinda like having that soft layer on top of a mattress and a real firm one below.

That's assuming Alf goes inside the camper before banging his head. I have a nephew that, when he was at the crawling stage, he quickly learned that when mad and wanting to bang his head on the floor, it was much better to first crawl into the living room where the carpet was softer than the linoleum floor in the kitchen. Smart kid!

Jim,

If you're installing beer taps, you're going to acquire a LOT friends very quickly! And when you hit the road, you'll look like the Pied Piper with all us folks following along behind.

What's your latest project? Don't keep us in suspense!

I finally got going on things this week, and pretty much have all the cabinetry framing done. Tomorrow I will start at the drawer boxes, then on to the doors.

I installed the water taps (dang, I really like the beer tap idea ) , as I had to do the water lines.

Focusing on making it usable, then on to solar, electrical and the such.

Not too worried about bears. That 'glass is tough, when drilling a couple holes through the bottom of my trailer, the bit went fast through the plywood, and really laboured once it hit the shell.

I always wondered after seeing that Scamp used the shredded fiberglass spray guns to lay up the fiberglass in their mold, how they could be sure it was a consistent thickness? Reace uses the fiberglass mat method doesn't he, Jim?

Really - I thought for sure someone said they talked with Reace and that ETI used the lay up mat method..... but then I just got older last week and tend to forget even more than I used too......

I still can't figure out how the spray method can give a consistent thickness....

Stupid question and just out of curiosity, if one opts out of the insulation, is it pretty much dead space between the inner and outer layer?

The two terms aren't mutually exclusive. Working in a f.g. shop paid for university. On a good day we'd knock off 3 ore car covers and 2 Kenworth truck cabs. The chopper gun can be used in two ways. It can put down a huge volume of chopped strand and resin. Add enough and you get a very strong product. But it's resin rich and not nearly as strong as using cloth or woven roving. That gives a stronger lighter product. So another way to use the chopper gun is to basically use it to spray the resin and wet out either mat, cloth or roving. Since it's also mixing 2 catalyzed resins it makes sense to use the gun. No one is going to hand mix and brush on that large amount of resin.

It's my guess that ETI uses some roving and maybe a little chopped strand. But I doubt that the trailer is composed of only a chopped strand layup.

The vinyl backed foam is then glued to the shell.
