I learned from a friend who built his house from a kit, to take pictures. He had instructions, but he also had photos of a finished house.
So, when I take something apart, I try to remember to take pictures as I go, so I can put it back together.

I have seen many times where the screened washer has been installed backward or the screen has been pushed in a bit. The screen will make enough contact with the check valve that it does not seat properly.

Maybe?

Edit to add: in repositioning the screen I must have hit the check valve.enough
