Wheel lock/boot security

After hearing a story regarding securing a trailer against theft, I realize my 2011 Escape 19 is in a possible situation where someone try to take it. What kind of wheel lock boot clamp might be a possible deterrent against theft? I realize that isn't necessarily the only way to secure my Escape but anything to slow down possible theft is something I want. Any suggestions?

I don't think that it is hugely robust; on the other hand, it's very visible, light, and packs easily in the front box. With the ball lock, we have a two-layer deterrent. My hope is that the thief would move on to easier pickings.

If you have a power tongue jack you can disconnect the power by removing the inline fuse or putting in a hidden switch.

If you have a manual tongue jack, I will be writing up an article next week on how you can lock that in the down position.

Having the jack dragging on the ground might literally slow them down.

I chose a Proven Industries lock for our ETI 19, lock model 2178-A. This is a heavy duty lock with a heavy duty price, but for me brought piece of mind. -Tom

I'm curious. I've watched a couple of YouTube lock cheaters and they actually are impressed with Proven Industries locks. Can they be beat...yes.

BUT they do recommend their locks as being some of the best.

So that being the case, the model that you have (2178A) - is that the one specific to an Escape trailer? Just asking for a friend

We also use a Brahma wheel lock. We’re close enough to Burnaby where they’re based we bought in person. The WL-001 model will fit the 15” wheels of the Escape. Note even if you have aluminum wheels you will not need the shallow hub cover despite what they tell you. We bought it and on installation I found the standard hub cover fits fine and does a better job of protecting the lug nuts from access. I am very pleased with the lock. It is substantial in build, easy to put on, and can fold flat for storage.

IMHO, the Brahma lock is only good for home storage. It is too bulky and heavy to take on camping trips. Of course, if camping in remote areas I would find a way to bring it along. I have one, but I stopped using it. Now I use a War-Lok pin lock on the king pin of my trailer and a GPS tracking device that sends an immediate alert to my cell phone if the trailer moves. That provides an added bonus, the euphoria of knowing that the scumbag thief/thieves if they get that far should be quickly apprehended and jailed.

We have the aluminum wheel option and have used a Masterlock python cable lock to secure the rear wheels. Threading between the two wheels does require a bit of bending down and reaching under the trailer but nothing too challenging. Wouldn't rely on this for long-term, unattended storage but for shorter periods it's an affordable deterrent. Also use this lock to secure our spare to the rear bumper.

If I were not isolating here, I'd not think twice about taking you up on your offer...from 6 feet away. But...I'm wondering if I can order online. Is this the Oklead heavy duty wheel lock I see on Amazon? If so, it does look easy.

One can always remove the spare tire cover for the duration of the trip and mount the lock on the spare tire while travelling.

Coupler locks are specific to the coupler design, rather than the trailer. This model and the 2516A are for the 2" ball Atwood yoke-type coupler and similar designs from other manufacturers, so they fit recent Escapes with the Ram coupler.

For lots of discussion, just search the forum for threads with "2178A" in them.

If you are referring to their Wheel Lock Model WL-200... I don't see how the material of the wheel matters, as long as there is a hole that the shaft can go through which is small enough that the lock on the end doesn't go through. The real problem with this lock is that it is specifically for trailers with leaf-spring suspension (the lock is a hook which goes around the spring), making it suitable for only 2014-2015 5.0TA's, and no other Escape.

You're probably talking about the Wheel Boot Model WB-300. That device includes this in the description:

Must have standard factory steel rims wheels found on most enclosed trailer.

Still, I don't see how this thing would fit all sizes of tire and not fit any alloy wheel. It might work; it will scratch the wheel.

leaf springs with no brakes, making it suitable for no escape ever...

and yeah, due to that, it was the other i was referring to.
