They're not blatant scams per se, since they do have a 'product'. But they're scams in the sense that they exaggerate their product's capabilities, and have used crowd funding to ripoff the...

Yep, part of why I err on the side of caution. 6K BTUs would theoretically work, but not if you're 6K unit actually produces only 4K.

My guess is that it would be inadequate. There's not alot of interior space to cool, so you'd think 6K BTU would be fine. But there's very little insulation and in direct sun the factory AC (11,500...

Thanks for the follow up Dave. I would expect that the system might be a little more susceptible to minor leaks, since it's a home system applied to a moving vehicle. But if all it takes is a little...

In the Fort Davis area I recommend Come and Take It, John. It's in Alpine, about 25 miles away. I haven't found a good barbecue place in Fort Davis unfortunately, but that doesn't mean there isn't...

Never had much faith in these crowdfunding ventures. Very few of them seem to work out.

Oh and Dave, if the wife and I ever decide to take a long trip to NJ with the 19 in tow, don't be surprised...

There's no reason why an inverter air conditioner of this type can't be designed to run on North American current. I suppose it's wait and see if they eventually sell a North American version. Kind...

I think you're right. The average RV buyer is impressed by the bling, and real usability and durability be damned. The fiberglass RV community is, I think, a bit more discriminating.

I'd pony up the cash for a factory installed mini-split in a heartbeat Dave. I suspect many others would as well.

I'm with you on that one Glenn. Gaining 2" of headroom where the AC used to be is not a compelling reason to do the retrofit in my opinion. Noise certainly is.

Barbara, short answer is no. Escape will not install a mini-split AC. It's a very custom install, as Dave has well documented. He's the first to attempt it as far as I know, but others will surely...

Yep exactly Dave. That's why I said we dont usually camp here (meaning south Texas) in the summer. If we want to camp between June and the end of September, we are usually headed north.

I would do it, but two things stop me: first, we don't usually camp in the summer here anyway because we don't like having to hunker down inside due to the heat, and second, I don't want to give up...

Interesting, but it might defeat part of the purpose - to get away from anything mounted to the roof which could produce noise or vibration. The other part is, the condenser units on these mini...

The rear for sure. You could relocate the spare and have a platform for the condenser unit there instead. And, since the dinette is in the rear on the 5er, that would put the inside unit close by.

I don't really see that as an alternative to the Mitsubishi, because the interior unit is square and blockish, rather than long and skinny. Can't be mounted out of the way.

I'd say if you want to tackle this, then the OP has proven it can be done. I don't think Escape would be involved in any "prep" work for such a mod during their build.

As for the stock AC however,...

I think you're right about the cost, but like anything else, the more it's adopted, the lower the price.

I don't see many similarities other than the split unit. It's a portable small AC unit designed for open window use. Way different from a permanent, custom and in my opinion "ingenious" install.

You're probably right about the factory flare. Doesn't even look like a flare -- more like a bend just to hold the nut on for shipping.

That brings up a good point. Dave, has your 19's A frame been reinforced where the rails turn toward the tongue? I know Reace did a recall on the 3" frames some time ago.

Yep, it would take some rethinking for sure. Not saying that it's possible, but the only place it could 'possibly' go on a 5er is at the rear over the dinette.
