2010 17B: Paint the Tired Interior?

Just finished the painting and am not a happy camper. Carefully masked the areas I did not want to paint, mostly the trim pieces. Today carefully removed the masking tape. I do not care what they say, the blue masking tape IS NOT easy release. It tore more of the wood grain paper off the trim than was the fact before I started! I do not know if there is a better kind of tape, but the blue is not it.


I am still considering what to do. At this point I will paint the trim pieces I had originally planned to leave wood grained. Will also pursue a source of wood grain tape to see it will solve the problem.


Meanwhile, on to selecting new flooring and getting it installed. Would like to use a vinyl loose lay in a narrow bamboo pattern, but have not been able to find the right one yet.

I don't know if there is a difference, but I use purple masking tape & have no problems removing it.

Not sure I'm reading this correctly, but did you remove the tape right after painting, or did you leave it overnight? I believe you are supposed to remove it shortly after painting.

I also found that you have to remove tape ( in my case gaffer tape ) slowly. S L O W L Y. It you rip it off, it will tear the oak surface.

I removed the tape the day after painting. If it is removed too soon the paint will not yet have set. I doubt time had much to do with it, since it tore the paper in random places. Probably more to do with tape application, with some adhering more than others.


Just got an email from Dave at Escape. They have tape available at .55 per foot. May be the best way to go, especially since I would have to purchase another full quart of paint. Will let everyone know, and, when satisfied, will post photos.

FWIW, when I used to get into a situation whee I'd worry about the tape doing damage. I'd run it through my fingers before attaching it. Nullified enough of the stick to make it release fairly easily. This was regular masking tape as opposed to the blue, which didn't exist as far as I know.

Found the following:
FrogTape® Multi-Surface painter's tape will come off without leaving a residue from most surfaces for up to 21 days (7 days in direct sun before you paint). We recommend that you remove masking tape immediately after you are finished painting to reduce the risk of tearing fresh paint.

Any good quality painters tape will do the trick. We do similar painting all the time. The tape is removed immediately after the final coat is done as it benefits from the wetness of the paint for removal without peeling.

Not only good tape, but a good paint too, on a well cleaned and prepared surface. Easy peasy.

Fix complete, turned out to be not much of a problem. It always helps to sleep on it, usually much better the next day.

On to replacing the floor, finally found what we want to do. Pictures when done.

Glad that works for you. When I try that, by the middle of the night, the problem has grown to immense proportions. Then I go out the next day, look at it, and it seems insignificant.

A little late to help marant but here is a 19 that also had the interior painted. From the pictures it looks really good.
