I am a sometimes amateur astronomy and general science nerd.... and upcoming on April 8, 2024, is a total solar eclipse that will cross most of North America, with a path from Mazatlan MX to Northern Maine. Catch-22, by the time the path hits the Texas Border, the odds are 50% it will be cloudy on any given April 8th, and those odds just get worse the farther north/east you go. In much of Mexico, the odds are 80% it will be clear.

So, with that in mind, several years ago I investigated RV trips to Mexico and found this company, Caravanas de Mexico, who came highly recommended by lots of people, so I contacted them and asked, and their contact person told me I wasn't the first to ask but they hadn't made any plans yet, but they'd add me to their list.

We signed up for their big trip, which is over 90 days and covers everything from Yucatan to Mazatlan, with a side trip to near Durango at 5000' elevation for high clear desert skies for the actual eclipse, and a side trip to the Copper Canyon on our way home. This Yucatan trip is sold out (max 12 RVs plus wagonmaster + a tow truck sweep), but they just announced their shorter trips still have some openings...

This communication is a short info one regarding the April 8, 2024 total Solar Eclipse in Mazatlan and Durango.

We still have spaces on short eclipse trips and some of our longer ones as well. We have to firm up our reservations by mid October, so this is the last chance.

The short term trips are 17, 19 and 24 day leaving Nogales, AZ on either March 31st or April 1st. The 19 day trip has 2 extra beach days. The 24 day trip includes the train to Copper Canyon, hotels & meals up there. You may find the prices and schedules at https://www.mexicocaravans.com/eclipse.html . There is also more info at https://www.mexicorvcaravans.com. There is an 80% chance of clear skies in Mexico, elsewhere from Texas on north chances are 50% or less. This eclipse is the last total solar eclipse in North America until 2045. It is a long one at 4.5 minutes. We will have a physicist (Dr. Joseph Izen) and eclipse expert along and glasses will be supplied. I should mention that children are OK. There is a reasonable surcharge for them that varies on number and ages.

If you are interested, you may book at https://www.mexicocaravans.com/book.html You need to pay a deposit to secure a spot.

Remember that Oct 15th is the cut off. We may be able to handle 1 or 2 more, but that would depend on us being able to increase reservations. I may be reached at 604-852-1342 until late October if you have questions or you may email me at beddows1@telus.net .

If you are nervous about RVing in Mexico, these short trips are a great way to try it out and if you are an Az Snowbird, it is right at the end of your season.
