5.0 Front Window

I've talked with Rease and Tammy about installing a front window in the "bedroom" of our 5.0 when build-time rolls around and it seems like it might be possible. My question to the 5.0 owners is; have you had any rock/stone chip issues with the upper portion of your trailer? We won't be able to get a protective shield for the front window (if we do decide to get it) and wonder if we will be setting ourselves up for a problem on down the road.

Opinions?

No rock chips, but it does get it's share of "BUG HITS"! Wouldn't be a big deal to clean them off glass though. I'd rather have a big sun roof over the bed to see the stars through personally, but then on full moon nights, that wouldn't be too good either : - )
You do get some rock chips on the lower section, so I'm looking at those rock flaps (which seems like a good idea).

You'll need to get a ladder out to wash it? Scamp no longer puts a front window in their 5th wheels. It's an option that they do everything they can to discourage. Pulling the trailer in the rain just drives water into the window area and has led to leaks. Besides, who wants a cold or hot head when sleeping? And you'll really need to work on a room darkening curtain/blind/shade. Your head will be right there.

If the window is flat, you can make a flat gravel guard out of plexiglass or fiberglass and install it ala Scamp.

Frankly the number of Scamp 5th wheels that I've seen over the years that have windows at the front loft, few owners ever remove the gravel guard... may as well not have the window.

Yep, a ladder or crawl up in the back of your truck. Either way, I agree totally with Donna, all points. Sounds like a neat idea, but practically, I don't think so. My personal opinion (which is what you were asking for I hope).

Hi: All..."I second that EMOTION". Sometimes the bugs are bad enough to have to use Baking Soda to remove them. When in bed your head tucks up in the nose cone and I would think any blinds/curtains would hang down in your face. The windows on either side slide open to allow cross ventilation and we use the MaxxFan all the time...even tow with it open. Alf

It sounds like we will have to discuss this option a bit more.It seems like there are more disadvantages than advantages.

Hi: All... I think a "Moon Roof" would be kinda romantic on a full moon night, but you might end up "Blinded by the LIGHT". Jim can do the job tho...he's got that saw remember :-\!!! Alf

It’s not in your profile, but I thought I read you are in Memphis… bug country. My vote would be no thank you, owning a truck camper with front windows up top. Gets covered in bug splatter and just one additional thing you have to maintain when you stop. I don’t know how but I have had plenty or rock chips up there too. Also, common in truck campers is water intrusion around the window seals from the direct wind blast. It may never happen on your escape, but some truck camper fronts flex in the wind blast for water to penetrate the seal . They are not molded fiberglass so You can’t really compare but I was just tossing out some ideas for you to ponder.

Yep...we're in bug country...and torrential downpour country too. We've talked it over and have decided not to go with the front window...for fear it would be a pane.

I think that's smart. I know my friend's monster 5th wheel .. See-Ya has a window, but the entire area has a molded "nose cone" that wraps around to the sides.... and as many times as I've camped with them, I've never seen that guard in the open position.

I think if the area was more of a "living" area it would be important, but not for a sleeping area. A vent/fan on the roof and opening those side windows you'll have plenty of ventilation.

We are also having an additional set of 12v wires run to the rear of the upper cabinets (near the closet and WC) for a small 12v marine fan...I've got my eyes on a pretty brass one that will look good with the oak trim.
