Hi all. Returning from Kansas through Colorado and Utah...on to Seattle. Need advice on park/forest (non-RV park) campgrounds you loved? We'd like to explore Flaming Gorge Res. off Hwy. 191 and then on to Salt Lake...north of the city off 84/15. Any advice? Thanks! Jan and Peter.

I don't know if you would consider state parks as non RV parks, but my favorites in Utah are Goblin Valley, Kodachrome Basin & Dead Horse Point.

Thanks! We'll take a look...and yes, state (and federal) parks are what we are looking at. We would like to do a little more rustic camping than the RV resort-type places that we've been enjoying so far. Thanks again. Jan and Peter.

I would second Jon's recommendation. You did not mention when this travel would be, these locations would be very hot in July and August. And could be hot at mid day in the months of June and September. Dead Horse Canyon is close ( <5 miles) from Goblin Valley and a difficult but beautiful hike up a slot canyon.

We stayed at Wasatch Mountain State Park last fall. It is near Salt Lake City. There were two RV's counting ours, and we had fantastic sites, with a great little fire pit between our units. $25 for full hook-ups, can't beat that.

If you are going through southern Utah we liked Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point, Capitol Reef and a private campground in Nephi call Big Mountain. Bryce Canyon is definitely worth a visit but the campground was nothing to shout about...it's okay but a little dreary.

Kodachrome Basin was great (half hour from Bryce Canyon) for camping and hiking and Snow Canyon near St. George was campground also a nice place.
