I hear there may be an Escape caravan headed to AK this summer.

I just made this run pulling my new Black Friday E21C with a 2016 RAM 3.0 ecodiesel. Actually, I started the trip in Gainesville FL on 3 May but these comments are restricted to the Canadian part of the trip. I have been driving round trip Gainesville FL to Fairbanks AK and back since 2018 (except for the COVID year), always pulling.

Slower running (50mph) is advised from Testa River Lodge, west of Ft. Nelson BC, through Muncho Lake Prov. Park. Lumpy narrow road with indistinct road lines. No potholes.

From Burwash Landing, west of Whitehorse on Kluane Lake, through about 35 miles east of Tok, AK the road is tolerably terrible as usual. Not much construction. No potholes. Take it slow even though some stretches may encourage you to speed up. Nastiness is just around the corner.

From Tok AK to Delta Jct AK you get a reprieve of about 100 miles of smooth driving.

Then there is a bad stretch from Delta Jct to Fairbanks with lots of construction, LUMPY road, pilot cars and lots of people in a hurry. Don't get in a hurry late in the day. This is the part of the run that shook a couple of minor things loose in my trailer.

I came through ahead of the smoke around Ft. Nelson BC. If you want to eliminate the possibility of smoke impeding your trip, then you need to make the decision to take the Cassiar Hwy (#37) instead of the ALCAN by Prince George BC. The Cassiar is narrower with no lines in lots of places, there are some really nice campgrounds along the way but services are much more limited. The Cassiar is more in the timber and it is more likely to be rainy along it than the ALCAN. It is a slower road than the ALCAN. I did this one year to beat the smoke.

Have a great trip if you are headed north!

Here is the smoke report site:

I hear from friends in Ft. St. John today (6/5) that there are some road closures due to smoke at Summit Lake in Stone Mtn. Prov. Park. These closures may be intermittent.
