We just got back from Montana and pulling the 15A over the Beartooth Highway. Check your rig (especially your brakes) if you decide to go. A gorgeous area to explore and not nearly as busy as Yellowstone.

Not that I saw. Grades are up to 10%. East to west direction is recommended by some gurus on the internet (I would agree). Some very nice and uncrowded forestry campgrounds along the way.

Been on our bucket list for some time now; our last trip out was too early in the season. I got an alert on my phone recently that it had closed due to snow but evidently this time of year only results in short closures-usually one day.

I've only done the Beartooth Highway on a motorcycle (highly recommended). I'm guessing that doing 40mph on a 20mph corner isn't as much fun while towing a trailer.

We have driven this magnificent highway a few times over the years. Most memorable was pulling my big fold down fully loaded over the top with the 82 Buick. The Buick was up to it and went on for another 70 thousand before I traded her. Trailer weighed 2900 with surge brakes and it snowed for about an hour up towards the top. My Dad was fond of saying "Easy does it". He hauled gasoline in the Ardennes in 1944. Made pulling the Beartooth and all other challenging highways seem possible to me. Nice Pictures

We are planning a trip from southern Alberta down to Montana and Idaho this summer with our new to us 17B. This just got added to our list!

Nothing better than the Rocky Mountains, Canadian or In the U.S.A.. Especially on $2.00 gasoline. $1.96 this AM in Eastern Iowa. North South through Montana. Highway 89. East/West in Idaho, the highway between Kooskia and the Lolo Pass along the middle form of the Clearwater and the Lochsa River. My favorites.

I had friends in the early 1960s who would take pack horses from Woodbine campground to Cooke City. No Dometic issues back then!!!!! Cheers Peter

Charles Kuralt labelled the Beartooth the most scenic highway in America. I agree. Just make sure your vehicle is up to it.

Dave, my Dad also served in the European theatre, but I got precious few stories out of him before he died.

After what those guys went through to save civilization, it makes hearing any modern day complaints so trivial.

Many Pines Campground on Hwy 89 in the Lewis and Clark National Forest is a nice stop on the way down or back. No hookups but only $10 per night. Nice couple as camp hosts as well.

Bear tooth

When we rode the Harleys to Sturgis we usually included the Beartooth one way or the other, although it did require leathers and a coffee stop, or was that a beer stop.
Jack and Nancy, only on 4 wheels now, that's 4 apiece.

The most famous of the Beartooth Highway’s adjoining scenic byways is the historic Chief Joseph Scenic Byway This well worth the drive as well in Red lodge there is a Koa (I think can t remember that far back which makes a great baseto see both roads) I will say I rember the Koa being run down but we were there to see the site

Jack, I took the Honda 305 Superhawk over some pretty big country when I rode from eastern Iowa to Idaho in early June 1969. Not much interstate then but plenty of snow from Deer Lodge down to Missoula. Sold the Honda in 1970 and bought an engagement ring and never looked back. 46 years and counting. We're now finally winning some of those longest married dances at wedding receptions. Hope you're having a great summer.

Shhhhh, don't let the secret out. We stayed at Many Pines on our way back from Osoyoos
Very nice. Had two marten cross the road in front of us just north of there. First ones this flatland Iowa boy ever saw. Looked like a big buck mink on steroids.
