Just purchased a 2014 21C and we finally got around to doing a full on cleaning today. There has was a bit of an odor in the camper that was much stronger under the bed. I found out why- there was a brown residue on the top of the black tank that was definitely dried “waste”. After thoroughly cleaning everything with bleach, I set out to find the source. I pulled off the mattress and removed the plywood over the black tank. We filled the black tank to the top and watched around the vent tube for leaks. There were no leaks there, but a very slight stream coming from behind the wall where the tank disappears into the bathroom.

This is obviously not a good thing and the smell must have been the gasses escaping the black tank. I did a search and could not find any information on black tank replacement. Has anyone done this on their own or is this going to be an RV repair company type job?

I guess the first task is to source a new tank of anyone has a lead please let me know.

I’d pull the toliet and replace the seal. I’ll bet that’s where the leak is

Well that would have be an amazing outcome if it works! The previous owner did replace the toilet, maybe the seal leaked or was not installed correctly. This makes sense as to why it would be smelly all the time but only leak when completely full. Thanks for the suggestion!

It looks like filing and flushing the tank a couple times and then replacing the tank seal did the trick! No more stink, no more leaks! Thanks
