Black tank rod

Today while I was dumping my black tank handle came all the way out... rod and all. I tried getting it back in to see if it would release the valve and it doesn't. Fortunately my black tank only registers a 1/3 full. Do I need to replace the whole valve system or does the handle screw into the housing? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Unless the threads have been damaged it should screw in fine like Donna said. If broken or badly damaged replacement will be needed. I had to do this to my 5.0TA. It is quite easy.

The tough part with an exchange for you would be draining the black tank. Maybe you could get a large pan to either collect the waste when you unbolt the valve, or maybe pry the valve open and drain it out before removing the valve.

Hopefully Plan A works. ;D

I remember replacing the handle on the shaft and it screwed on but I couldn't remember if I've ever detached a shaft. So I went out and turned the handle round and round but the shaft didn't appear to unscrew.

My shaft doe not have threads so it either broke after the threads or has come loose. Any ideas on how to empty the tank with your waste hose attached?

Found an easier way to move the blade to empty the tank. Drilled a 3/16th hole on the back in the middle of the housing. Took a flat head long handle screwdriver and pushed the blade out. Very little runoff and I had a bucket to catch it all.

Never used any lube on the gasket but seated the gasket on the pipe not the valve housing. Lined everything up and screwed it back together.

Thanks for the advise and help.

speaking of...

my last dump station session a few days ago, the grey valve handle, half of the "T" broke off. can I replace just that handle, or will I have to replace the whole grey valve ?

Both the handles and the rods are threaded on my 2014 5.0TA. Since we both have the same years trailers, even if different models, I bet your are the same. But it's really easy to find out. See if they'll unscrew. IF so, yep, replaceable.

aesome, found the Valterra metal replacement handle, ordered.

hey, while I'm here :D My grey valve has been very stiff and hard to open/close.. whats the best/easiest way to lube these? spray silicone, spray Triflow, or what? Should I be spraying it into the drain hose fitting (when the tanks are empty), or is just spraying it on the valve stem adequate?

Someone here on the forum suggested faucet grease. Ordered this on Amazon, about $5, a tube has lasted more than four years. About every other time the rod is extended, I put dab on my gloved finger and run it up and down the rod. I'm sure there's other things you could use, this works for me.

ah I was thinking it was the valve plate and whatever seal it has around the edges that needed lubing. if its just the rod, thats easy.

Wondering why you put the hole on the backside. Doesn’t that mean you have to lay under there to access it? Same thing with the video, didn’t he say saw a hole in the back? If I’m at the dump station I want easy access to use the screwdriver.

I'm not totally sure what this last person did but the one that used the hole on the "back side" didn't mean the area towards the underside but the face towards the rear of the trailer. If that makes sense. Personally I'd just replace the valve. Crowded dump sites with lineups are no place for fiddling with your valve.

Nice solution. I will remember this if/when it happens to us. :ermm:

Hello Ron, wasn't the point was the handle, rod and all, came off the dump valve and it wouldn't/couldn't be reattach so the blank tank valve was in the closed position with no way to open it and a full tank.

If you tried to replace the valve with a full tank I'm sure you see where that would end up.

I didn't read it as drilling the hole was a permanent solution, it was a temporary fix to allow you to empty your tank so you could then replace the entire valve assembly. So it's a 1 time fiddling with your tank at the crowded dump site.

If I misunderstood your post I apologize in advance.
