Ceiling vent/fan not working properly

I have a 2013 Escape 21 C. The ceiling vent/fan lid is not cranking correctly. It had been working just fine until the other day. When I go to turn the crank to open it starts to open and the crank seems to slip a bit and it doesn't open. If it is open all the way and I start to close it will close almost all the way and then stop with about half an inch open.

I have tightened the screw that holds the crank on. If I reach between the fan blades I can push the lid open with my hand but this is a bit of a hassle as I have to take the screen off and etcetera. I have taken most of the fan apart but I have not seemed to be able to get to the top of that crank shaft.

Has anyone experienced these problems with their ceiling fan lid? Were you able to repair it?

Ours had some kind of rubber/plastic (???) piece break the other day while we were out camping. It was obvious that we lost a piece, so what’s wrong with ours is probably not what’s wrong with yours, but the cranking-not cranking action sounds very similar. My husband is going to trouble shoot and hopefully order the replacement part in the next couple of days. I will report back.

For what it’s worth, he tied the lid down with zip ties before we hit the road. We were afraid it would not stay closed once underway…

There is a pot metal gear box that connects the crank handle to the lid. That failed on my fan (as it has on many) and needed to be replaced. Hope that is not your problem, but if it is there are two versions of the gearbox. The manual lift uses a long shaft (the link I posted) The power lift version uses a short shaft. Unfortunately, the long shaft version is more expensive.

Must be done from the outside up on the roof. It comes with instructions or watch this video. The video is for the power lift version which uses the shorter shaft, but the process is the same.
