Cold weather camping

Well it is now official - February was the coldest month ever in Syracuse, NY (9°F average temperature). And just for those thinking of using this as proof there is no Global Warming, according to NOAA, January global temperatures were the second warmest ever (54.99°F).

We still have between 1' & 2' of snow cover, and Lake Ontario is iced over as far out as you can see. I'm really looking forward to our first official sign of Spring - the opening of Rudy's fish stand on the lake. (Scroll down for some 2012 opening photos, and no, they don't serve Poutine!) They are going to have to do a lot of plowing; right now you can't even see the lake from the road.

Just ordered Rearview cameras from NY and Fed-ex said there could be a problem due to storms.

As a follow up, for non-lower foam trailer owners at FUP campsites:

As mentioned here by several, being "slightly" below freezing is no problem, especially if daytime highs go up above freezing by a margin. Dennis expressed an opinion that over night lows going down to the single digits Celsius would be acceptable, if there was night time heating of the trailer space (darn right!) .... this assumed that days got into the teens to warm up the tanks.

Stronger measures for lower average overnight temps, as per CPAHarley's (and others) posts, would be in order.

I have had no problems so far with my exposed pipes to an estimated -5*C. (knocks on wood).

Just a short trip, about 3 weeks. Have some friends in Palm Springs who invited us down, wife signed up for the Laughlin 1/2 Marathon so we will make a trip out of it. We have not done the snow bird thing yet but maybe this will entice her a bit..... Besides, it has been a pretty mild winter for us.

What the heck is the FUP I keep seeing? Have I been kept sheltered all these years? LOL

I too have camped down below -5°C, with daytime highs near 10°C, and have had no problems with tanks freezing. One time at Thanksgiving (the Canadian one), on the last morning I went to drain tanks to begin the winterization, and the drain hose was sorta frozen. I warmed it with my hands a bit, and waited a short while, and it freed up.

Yeah, "FUP" isn't an acronym for anything sensible, but I can see a listing using it as some sort of symbol... although I would write it as "FUp" if I decided to use those letters. I think the RV.net practice is to use "FHU" (the acronym"), anyway.

FUP was a new one to me but not to tough to figure out. Like Robert mentioned, if you were in IT (Information Technology) for long you get pretty good at guessing acronyms. Unfortunately you also get accustomed to using them, probably too much.

Yeah, FUP is not easily interpreted. Maybe it is my imagination, but it seems to me that our American friends rely much more heavily on acronyms than we do in the GWN.

... in the GWN.

Yay!!! I figured one out easily. :)

It takes a mere second to type out most acronyms in full. Heck, just the time many of us have spent discussing, would have been enough time to spell out a years worth. ;)

Basically, if it takes more time to explain what it means, than to actually take the brief moment to fully type out......why?

Some do become commonly used in discussion, like AWOL, A/C, ASAP....just starting with the As. :)

Apparently Google doesn't know what the word means either. I will banish it from my posts from now on. Carry on.
