With the air in the trailer a bit warmer, it holds more moisture, which helps to keep it from condensing on surfaces in the trailer.

Regarding the heater/fan: I guess I thought that the low wattage (90 W) and intended use in RV's meant it was safe to use in the trailer over the winter, though I always checked every 2-3 weeks in our previous trailer in case it started acting up.

I think that's a reasonable expectation. Although part of the manufacturer's marine line, rather than specifically for landlocked RVs, maintaining the interior of a vehicle in storage is the intended purpose.

Have used one of those plug in units for close to 10 years now--no condensation in the trailer... we don't have the cold as much as much as the WET..

How often do you check on the unit over the winter, Anna-Marie? I'm still wondering what the risk is of the fan or heating components overheating and causing a fire. When checking on it I am always relieved to hear it running quietly. As I mentioned earlier, I also worry about leaving the home PVR on when we are on vacation. I don't know if that is any safer.

As to its effectiveness, from our experience with the previous trailer it really made a difference, simply by raising the trailer's temperature a bit and reducing condensation. I think that it should extend the life of the desiccant and maybe make the trailer drier.

Only to a point. While warm air does hold more water vapor, with cold exterior temperatures and cold surfaces like glass, that water vapor will still condense.

The most effective way to reduce humidity is to warm air, allowing it to hold water vapor and then exhaust it. Since you can't stop air infiltration, usually exterior moisture laden air, the best way is to use some heated air and ventilate it to the exterior. So a source of warmth plus a cracked hatch is an effective way to accomplish that.

I use a light bulb with a chimney but I've also used heaters in boats over the years. Never had a problem but didn't trust that situation 100% either.

A Personal Video Recorder. I thought just about everyone had one these days, as they have been around for years. Heck, we have two and I don't watch much TV, though much of what I do watch is recorded on it.

Most of them are built into the digital receiver on the cable or satellite box.

Must be the same as a DVR, digital video recorder. I have and use one, can't stand all the commercials these days.

What else do you all call the device that records incoming TV shows? That "recording thingy" does not count.

I know some of you make up lots of weird words, like "stinger" for "ball mount", "frig" (a soft form of the F word around here) for "fridge". There sure are some weird folks around here. Good thing for me that I am the epitome of normalcy. ;D

I don't call it anything as I don't use it (if I even have one). I find it increasingly difficult to find anything to watch on the television (down to two programs), let alone be anxious enough to record something.

This what I use and thought you were also, no fan, just heat. I leave it one 24/7 in the trailer, sitting on my cutting board on top of the stove. Keep moisture at bay, so to speak.

Yeah, and they say "ruff" and we say "roof" Hate most of the offerings on TV but like the news and some documentaries. Couldn't watch them if I couldn't delete the commercials.

Our trailer is parked right outside our back door. It usually has a car cover on it during the winter--so we don't go in very often---maybe once a month---the thing is just keeps humming along...

if we have a real cold winter we'll put a little cube heater in there turned down low---still don't check it that often

We have also found that a thermoplug is useful. Designed for heating wire, it turns on when temps reach 30 and shuts off at 50. The cube heater is plugged into this and this gives it much more control for keeping things from freezing but isn't running all the time.

Well ... I wondered too ... what a PVR was. Glad I'm not the only one. That is until mine went off in alarm mode. I didn't know I had one. It stands for Pervert Video Recorder and has been in alarm mode whenever any US presidential candidates speaks ... of either party. I unplugged it but it still rings loud and clear as it has a power blackout standby source of power. What to do? Move to Canada? Please advise.
