Crossing the border to Canada.....

Back to the topic of crossing into Canada. For those new to the forum and planning on crossing the border with a dog or other furry friend, make sure you are up on all of the requirements. Of course records of up to date shots, but also a signed document proving ownership (provided by a vet) and there may be restrictions on pet food as well, i.e. pet food should be new, sealed bags or cans.

Here is a guide for travel with a dog to/from Canada that you may find useful.

As far as that CDC dog import form needed to take a dog into the US we have crossed a number of times with our dog and that form on the phone and when I've volunteered to show them the form, they have never actually looked at it. Just know that is the requirement and you'd better have it.

We asked at the US border about the form when it first came in and we were told it is digressionary for the officers. Our guy was only concerned with people crossing with puppies. Ours was not a pup so he didn't bother checking.
But you are correct, Adrian, you'd better have one if they ask.

I saw an article today that because of high eggs prices in the US folks are ducking across the border to buy eggs. With bird flu that's now a no-no. When the rules changed while we were entering Alaska once what had been OK two weeks before wasn't now. It was just put the eggs in the deep freeze and they would be dealt with. Now there's evidently a $300 fine associated with that.

Moral of the story: don't assume that the rules don't change. If in doubt, don't.

I've been reading a lot about border crossings, since I've been planning my Alaska trip. Recently, someone had an open bag of dog food taken from them because it contained chicken. I expect with the bird flu, any bird product is going to be a no-no. Pay attention.
