Dexter bearings lifespan?

That part is strange, since the brake drum is the hub... they're one cast iron part, so it's not possible to remove the drum from the hub. I suspect that there has been some miscommunication, which doesn't matter as long as the work has been done properly.

Yeah, I struggled with exactly what he said. I do know they had to cut something off and I thought he said a new drum was needed at a cost of $70 for the part.

It's possible that they couldn't get one of the old bearing races out of the hub, so they had to replace the hub/drum - that's not unreasonable, and $70 would be a good price for one.
 
Component removal

I once had to Dremel tool grind off a wheel backing plate on an old Casita...which holds the brake shoes and magnetic actuator, as a nut was frozen and access sketchy. A brake drum? I can't fathom, except if the bearing got welded to it (the bearing race) from the heat buildup.


All speculation, without seeing things up front.
