Do I need reservations for the Pacific Coast in June?

We are picking up our new 21 on May 23 and heading to the Rally in Osoyoos. Following the rally our plan is to take a few weeks going through Washington, Oregon, and California as we make our way home to Southern California. We have been going through all the old threads describing great places to camp along the way. We appreciate all of you who have shared your experiences. We would rather not be tied down to a specific itinerary if we can avoid it so we have not yet made any reservations for after we leave the rally. I know in Southern California during the summer months it can be very difficult to get camping sites along the coast. Are we going to run into the same problem in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California?

Yes, you will run into the same problems in Oregon and Washington- can't speak for northern California. Some of the Oregon state campgrounds have already been booked for months during the summer months. You always have the option of staying in private campgrounds like KOA or something similar if you don't want to tie yourself down reserving ahead. We travel like that and are willing to stay in private campgrounds and haven' t had any trouble not finding a space. We will be picking up our new 21 ft. in June.

Yes you will need reservations during the summer months (Prime Time) from San Diego to Washington. We have encountered many frustrated campers desperately looking for sites along the coast and all Major NFS campgrounds and state parks. They are reserved 6 months to a year in advance. good luck

You may have some luck at the private parks, Matt, but come June 1, we find almost all north coast Ca. State Parks totally booked through the end of summer. Inland SPs are much more available without reservations. A month or two earlier, you’d be fine. In April of 2016 we had plenty of options in both Oregon and Ca., but I wouldn’t push June, with schools letting out. Good Luck!

In June, finding campsites on the Oregon coast can be difficult. Many state parks are completely reserved, especially on weekends. There are often openings during the week, especially if you will accept singletons. Another option is county parks. For instance, Tillamook County has reservable campgrounds which still have openings, and will DURING THE WEEK even in mid summer. There's a campground, Barview Jetty, which we stay in when we can't get into Fort Stevens State Park near Astoria, Nehalem Bay State Park near Manzanita, or Cape Lookout State Park near Pacific City. The 3 state campgrounds I mentioned get full quickly while the county campgrounds take longer to fill. Tillamook County has a couple other campgrounds on the coast, also. They are small.
